How many pictures have been uploaded in 2010 contest? Were there any prizes at that time? What was a general budget at that time? Polimerek 09:28, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

1) The 2010 contest was an article writing contest. Not a picture contest. It produced 1200 entries of which 200 were of uploadable quality (referenced, copyedited, NPOV and in general meeting wikipedia standards).
2) It was sponsored by the Government of Tamil Nadu and was conducted as part of the Tamil Classical Conference 2010. 11 prizes of INR 10,000 (about 225 USD at that time) each were awarded. So total prize money was about 2400 USD.
3) Apart from the prize money, we are not aware of the general budget for the contest. The outreach, media advertisements, posters, fliers, postage, certificates were all part of the overall Tamil Conference effort ( the total conference budget was nearly 400 Crore/4 Billion INR). --Sodabottle 09:42, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mayur's Queries[edit]

First of all I shall appreciate Coordinators to plan for this nice effort but here are some suggestions and queries-

  1. You can increase some amount in "prize money" or "Certificates and Postage" and utilize it to provide FAQ and wiki editing tutorials, Tamil wiki DVDs to rest of participant that would encourage also them.
  2. if Certificates are planed to be sent to every participant, is ($50=2500 Rs. approx.) sufficient for 100-200 participant?
  3. Do you have enough sponsors or your Budget completely relies on this Grant.if it is being completely covered through this grant, you can increase requested grant amount, rest of amount can be used for future meetups.

Thanks for the wishes and ideas Mayur. Here are the replies
  1. We are preparing editing and uploading tutorial/guidelines as part of the contest effort - Screen captures, Screenshots, FAQs and PDF files. But we are keeping the tutorials as an online effort only. We are planning an offline distribution of tutorial material and offline wikipedia versions as a separate effort (not as part of the contest) and currently don't want to combine both projects. The tutorials we create as part of the contest will definitely be reused later in the offline distribution project as well.
  2. We are planning on issuing physical certificates only for the 8 prize winners. For the other participants PDF certificates will be e-mailed. The 50$ allocation will be enough for printing and mailing the 8 certificates for the prize winners from the Indian/Srilanka and from among the worldwide diaspora. (The 50$ also includes postage for other outreach material)
  3. We are depending on this grant completely for the cash component. Our outreach budget is low as we have managed to find free adspace / announcement space from a number of organisations - Tamil groups/ online magazines/ print magazines etc for outreach purposes. Apart from the offers mentioned in the application, we have received ad space / announcement space in muthukamalam.com, palkalaikazhakam.com. We have also received preliminary offers of adspace from five of Sri Lanka's leading Tamil newspapers (waiting for official confirmation).
  4. Regarding the meetups. All the meetups/workshops so far have been organised with the help of local sponsors (colleges / Tamil organisations /blogger groups etc). This model is currently working well without the need for financial support from WMF or other organisations. So currently we have no necessity for funds toward meetups/workshops. But incase we scale up the physical outreach, we will put in a detailed grant application for WMF support.

Jury, criteria and point system[edit]

Thanks for submitting this application. You really have the most important things in the project's scope, but I'm curious to know more about the judgement during the contest. So, what is the jury that will look over the files? What criteria will be established to do so? And what is the point system or whatever it's called to judge every particular work? The five coordinators (all Tamil Wikimedians) will form the jury. The judging criteria is "50 % quality (resolution, clarity, elegance), 50 % utility value (How useful they will be in illustrating Tamil wiki pages and pages in other wikis)". Each member of the jury will rate each media file twice - once for quality and once for utility value - on a scale of 0 to 50. These two ratings will be combined to arrive at the final point tally on a scale of 100 points. As the coordinators themselves will be the jury, to avoid conflict of interest, our own entries (and our close relatives') will be ineligible for prizes and wont be judged.
