Proposal Feedback and Invite for Response[edit]

Thank you for submitting your application. After the review process please find the feedback - comments and questions below for your response;

  • We are keen to learn more about your capacity including experience and skills to implement the proposed plan including on all the involved Wikimedia projects.
  • Please share with us on the action and cognitive outcomes you are hoping the project will have and especially in relation to your target audience. We are keen to know at what point will you know the project has worked.

Expert reviewer 1:

  • It is unclear how (or whether) the proposed activities may maintain or improve community health, safety, and inclusivity. I would recommend that the group to utilize The Wikipedia Library (WP:TWL) to freely access pre-researched papers on Aati Month for background information gathering. I would like to see the applicant explain if they plan on bringing new contributors to English and/or Tulu Wikipedias. And since this proposal focuses on culture, it may also be beneficial to include contributions to English Wikivoyage pages in Karavali region.
  • The proposal could bring new contributors to Wikipedia, Commons and Wikidata. It will contribute to the documentation of culture through images and videos.
  • Since the project involves a number of doctors, will they plan on publishing this experience in a paper or posters? How can the international community benefit and understand the culture better beyond the grant report? If there is an intention on publication, it should be listed under "Other metrics" similar to the documentary film and preferably under open access license. Furthermore, will the documentary film be uploaded to Commons?

Expert Reviewer 2:

  • I think this project is pretty well-designed and well-scoped. They have demonstrated their ability to produce high-quality documentaries in previous projects.
  • I think they might need further support on it.

Thank you and we look forward to receiving your responses to support us in the next steps. On behalf of the South Asia Regional Committee and Staff - VThamaini (WMF) (talk) 13:40, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello VThamaini (WMF) Thank you for providing feedback on my grant application. I appreciate the thoughtful considerations and suggestions for improvement. Here are my responses:
Expert Reviewer 1:
  • Capacity, Experience, and Skills: I recognize the importance of showcasing my capacity, experience, and skills. As an active member of Karavali Wikimedians, I regularly organize events and meetups. We recently successfully completed the "Pursa Kattuna" documentary film. Inspired by this, Karavali Wikimedians User Group initiated a new project to elaborate on the living heritage of Tulu Culture.
  • Action and Cognitive Outcomes:
  1. Increased Cultural Awareness: The project aims to engage village people and Tulu-speaking individuals, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their cultural heritage. Through various activities and content, participants are expected to gain insights into the rich traditions and linguistic nuances of the Tulu-speaking community.
  2. Skill Development for Journalism Students: Journalism students involved in the project may benefit from hands-on experience in content creation, research, and storytelling. The initiative provides a practical platform for them to apply their skills in documenting and disseminating information about Tulu culture and folklore.
  3. Community Collaboration and Participation: By targeting members of the Karavali Wikimedians User Group, the project encourages collaborative efforts in contributing to online platforms.
  4. Enhanced Research and Documentation Skills:Folklorists involved in the project are likely to experience cognitive benefits through research and documentation. This may include the compilation of oral histories, preservation of traditional stories, and analysis of cultural practices, contributing to the academic understanding of Tulu folklore.
  5. Language Preservation and Promotion: Tulu-speaking individuals engaging with the project may experience cognitive outcomes related to language preservation. By actively participating in discussions, documentation, and content creation, they contribute to the promotion and safeguarding of the Tulu language.
  6. Critical Thinking and Media Literacy: Journalism students, as part of the target audience, are expected to develop critical thinking skills and media literacy. Analyzing and presenting information about Tulu culture requires a thoughtful approach, enhancing cognitive abilities related to research, analysis, and effective communication.
  • Community Health, Safety, and Inclusivity:We conduct monthly meetings to enhance understanding within the community, addressing community health, safety, and inclusivity. The Karavali Wikimedians include folklorists and professors from universities, ensuring a well-planned pre-survey for this project.
  • Bringing New Contributors:To address the goal of bringing new contributors to English and Tulu Wikipedias, we have promoted our previous documentary film extensively. With over 11,000 viewers, there is a growing interest among students and the general public to join the Wiki platform.
  • Publication and Documentation:We acknowledge the importance of documenting project outcomes. With the support of folklorists and professors, we plan to raise awareness through research papers and journal articles derived from this project. This will ensure that our findings are widely accessible, benefiting the international community and fostering a deeper understanding of the culture further we document it in blog posts, diff articles, and translate it into other languages. Additionally, we confirm our commitment to uploading the documentary film to Commons, making it readily (Previous project outcomes) available to the Wikimedia community.

Feedback from Expert Reviewer 2:

I appreciate the positive feedback on the project's design and scope. Your recognition of our ability to produce high-quality documentaries is encouraging.
