Hello Dominic, and thanks for your proposal to prototype a bot that would help evaluate the impact of projects relying on bulk uploads. We have some initial questions we ask of all technology / software development-based projects for initial review. Please see these questions below:

  • Will the code produced during the project be made public and published under a free software license?
  • Does the project have multiple maintainers / planners, or will the bot be primarily maintained by a single person?
  • I've noted that there is an intention to prepare documentation for the bot based on the proposal-- where do you expect this documentation will be published?

@I JethroBT (WMF): Thanks for your questions. Here are some responses:
  • The code will be public. The prototype is already published (if not very findable at the moment) on PAWS, and in the future we will publish it on DPLA's GitHub repo or anywhere else that is reasonable to share it to. DPLA already publishes all of it's code under a free license (typically the MIT License).
  • The project is managed by Dominic Byrd McDevitt and all initial work has been done by him so far. Other technical staff at DPLA may become involved as necessary, but I would say it will still be primarily maintained by one person.
  • Since the public-facing part of this project will operate on Wikimedia Commons, I expect to put up a page on Commons that would explain to users how to use it. This project would be linked where it makes sense to do so, such as Commons:Tools and in GLAM-Wiki community pages.
Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions or would like to discuss further! Dominic (talk) 20:01, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Dominic: Hello Dominic, thanks very much for your Rapid Fund proposal supporting bot development for GLAM-related needs. Unfortunately, we are not able to move forward with funding your proposal due to limitations in the budget for the Rapid Fund program this fiscal year. Our next fiscal year begins on 1 July 2024, and I anticipate we will be able to begin reviewing and funding new Rapid Fund proposals for technical projects around that time. I can follow-up with you when we have determined a more specific timeframe for when we will be accepting new proposals for the next fiscal year. With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 22:46, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
