Request to add recommendations and suggestion from the Wikimedia Education Team[edit]

Dear DSaroyan (WMF), As I mentioned in the grant application about informing the Wikimedia Education Team of this proposal which they were so excited about, @MGuadalupe (WMF) from the education team went through the application and had valuable suggestions and recommendations. I wish to request for access to my grantee portal to input these suggestions and recommendations to the application. From her suggestions and recommendations, I would love to make the following changes:

Q2. I wish to make these changes to the approaches used to answer this question.

  • Support certified Teachers of Reading Wikipedia in the classroom (RWC) to incorporate their RWC lesson plan into regular classroom activities for their students in order to raise awareness and critical use of the projects. (This would encompass: Familiarize students with the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework to better comprehend the different phases of the information cycle. Utilize a knowledge quest to teach students the core content policies of Wikipedia. Furnish students with the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom quick guide to learn how to combine Wikipedia into their classroom activities)
  • Facilitate the incorporation of local content on English Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikipedia Common by secondary school students led by secondary school teachers. (This would include:Recruit and train secondary school students for the Eduwiki secondary school club in the Kumbungu District.)
  • The Certified teachers would be assisted to prepare a list of articles/suggested topics/activities that the students will be working on during the editathon/final session day so the students are well-supported from the beginning.

I wish to request for access to my grantee portal to be able to make these changes and others as recommended by the Wikimedia Education Team. Thank you. Fatawu25 (talk) 21:50, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not Funded: Feedback and Decision[edit]

Hello Fatawu25, thank you for submitting your grant application. We appreciate your interest in contributing to the mission of the Wikimedia Movement.

After reviewing your application, we have decided to not fund your Rapid Fund request. Here are the main reasons for our decision:

  • It is critical to work more closely with other wider community groups to avoid duplications of efforts. "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" is also supported by Dagbani Wikimedians User Group in the region and we request that you collaborate with them to avoid duplication of efforts and resources. Please do it in advance before putting down a grant request.
  • We appreciate your request added to the discussion page. However, as the changes described are substantial and we think that the first decline reason is critical, we recommend that you revisit the application and re-submit it in the next review round with all issues addressed.
  • Recommendation for such projects in future is to focus the strategy more on the work that teachers will conduct. This could be done by supporting certified Teachers of Reading Wikipedia in the classroom (RWC) to incorporate their RWC lesson plan into regular classroom activities for their students in order to raise awareness and critical use of the projects. The program could also facilitate the incorporation of local content on English Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikipedia Common by secondary school students led by secondary school teachers. The role of the teachers should be highlighted in both strategies, and they should be involved in preparing a list of articles, suggested topics, and activities that the students will be working on during the program.
  • It is important to put students' safety front and center, and the role of the teachers should be highlighted in the communications strategy. It is required to have a youth safety policy in place, when the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth.
  • Think more critically about the open metrics. For instance, in this proposal it would have been good to include the aspects of MIL development, perspectives of Wikipedia, and students' satisfaction with the program. The post-program survey and/or interviews should be included in the evaluation strategy.
