We ask you to respond to the following questions:

  1. In what ways do you think this research can support you or other members of the Wikimedia communities in the work that you do on the Wikimedia projects?
  2. What advice do you have for the authors to improve their research or the impact of their research? (We encourage you to share with the authors projects or initiatives that you think can benefit from the result of their research. This can help the authors connect their work with ongoing projects in the early stages of their research.)

Lane Rasberry's money in this[edit]

summary - I will use my part of the budget to hire research contractors

I am a co-applicant in this, Lane Rasberry, user:bluerasberry. There is a budget for me of US$9000.

I will manage this budget but it will not go to pay me personally. I am a researcher at the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia and I have my own salary. It is difficult with university administration to bring in funding for myself in my university role, and also, I can join this project in my usual role without personal sponsorship.

At my university for this kind of research US$9000 is a relatively small budget. Here is how I propose to spend it -

  1. Collaborate with Fernando, the primary contact for this project, to hire a researcher or contractor in Brazil to do this. I would manage this person without pay to myself. I prefer the money to go to Brazil where the wiki community for research is generally better organized than my country the United States, and the money goes further
  2. Hire a researcher anywhere else besides the United States, where the money goes further
  3. As a stable fallback measure, I can hire student researchers at my university, the University of Virginia. There are standard rates for undergraduate and graduate students, and depending on other hires, I can reliably get good students here. It is more expensive than other options and with wiki, I like supporting researchers outside the United States, but sometimes reliability and familiar networks are best.

Happy to support and participate. Bluerasberry (talk) 21:41, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
