Comments from DSaroyan (WMF)[edit]

Hi Biowikician, thanks for submitting this Rapid Grant application and congratulations on your first Wikimedia Foundation grant! I have reviewed your application and have some questions:

  • You mentioned that you plan to have 64 participants in total who will mostly include experienced editors, and you also plan to have 150 Wikidata items created. It means that each participant will edit ~2 Wikidata items (150/64) for the whole event. I think this is a low number and I’d need further explanation on how you have come up with such a target.
  • Additionally, if you are going to have 8 repeat participants for all events, then this will already adds up to 64 participants (8*8). Did you include the number of new participants into the number of total participants?
  • Did you include organizers into the number of participants? If yes, please exclude them from this target.
  • Are you going to announce an open call for participants?
  • In your budget you have “Graphic design for the event ads: USD 150” expense: please split off this budget item.
  • I also need to understand the need of having “graphic design” for the event. Could you provide more information on what kind of visuals you plan to create?
  • Could you please provide more details about the type of internet data you propose to offer to participants? What will 20 USD/per person cover?
  • Are you going to offer souvenirs to the organizers too?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 11:04, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My response[edit]

Thank you DSaroyan (WMF) for your comments and suggestions. Please find below my response:

  • There is no guarantee that most of the participants will be experienced Wikidata editors because it will be an open call that is why we will be organising trainings on zoom before they will edit to show them the properties, values, qualifiers and references to add to items to be created and how to add references. This is because the events will be promoted on WhatsApp groups, newly created @WikidataNigeria twitter handle, facebook and instagram. I have identified 150 but the traditional states is about 250 that is why I put it as 150+ on the proposal page. In addition, where a traditional state does not exist on wikidata this will also be created. I have adjusted the target to 250 to reflect this.
  • Maybe I did not communicate this well because I hope to get 1 repeat participants for 8 events which sums up to 8. That is because I am assuming that at least 1 participant may not grasp much from a training and may likely join another training.
  • No, I did not include the organizers in the target.
  • Yes it is an open call. I plan to promote it on all available social media channels.
  • This will be online digital banners that will be designed and used for each event to create awareness for the trainings and editathons.
  • Digital banners is needed because the training/edithatons is 8 series of events packed as one.
  • Since the number of participants cannot be projected or ascertained correctly, I plan to give the first 8 persons to join the zoom meetings data bundles/subscription to continue editing and to subsidise their joining zoom. These 8 persons will not be repeat participants. I will welcome advice on this.
  • No, the organizers have assured me of their willingness to support me and make my event a success.
Please let me Know if I have answered your questions. Thanks--Biowikician (talk) 15:05, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Additional comments[edit]

Hi Biowikician, thanks for your response. I have a few additional comments and questions, please address them as well:

  • We think that the event scope is too large for a new grantee, even with support from experience editors. Therefore, we request to reduce the scope of the event, running 4 events instead of proposed 8. Please reduce the number of proposed events and adjust the budget and targets accordingly.

  • We haven't received sufficient information about the internet data costs. We think that data costs seem very high and would like to understand how was 20 USD/per person calculated?
This is the cost of internet subscription for 2 months to be giving to unique participants. Since souvenirs will be provided for only top 10 participants, I am using this to encourage participants to join the zoom trainings because one of the excuse of editors for not joining zoom meetings is internet and this will also help them to continue editing for the duration of the project.--Biowikician (talk) 11:44, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Additionally, we'd like to request information about the services you are using for graphic design. How did you calculate 150 USD for these costs? Please provide more information about the services and costs for graphic design.Biowikician (talk) 11:44, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please find it here for the adjusted 112 USD on the proposal page.--Biowikician (talk) 11:44, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Biowikician, thanks for addressing my first request. I still don't understand how you calculated the costs of internet and graphic design. Could you please provide more details about what 20 USD/per person and 112 USD will include? --DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 12:04, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
USD 20 is for the 32 participants to subscribe to the internet on their individual device(smartphone or laptop) for 2 months (duration of the training and editathon). USD 10 x 2 months internet subscription x 32 participants = USD 642. I am using this to engage participants during and after the event. Since I will not be providing souvenirs for all the 32 participants, I think this is the best I can do to encourage them. I want them to be involved from the start to the end of the event and to continue engaging them. The USD 112 is for different digital banners that will be used to promote the 4 events on social media. To attract new set of participants to train on each events I need to design a different digital banner for each event to make it look new. Basic package for such can be found here. Please let me know if this is explanatory enough and if it is not please advice accordingly and I will make the changes.--Biowikician (talk) 15:42, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
