Hello Udehb, and thanks for this proposal to support structured data content on Wikidata realated to hospitals in Nigeria. Here are my comments and questions:

  • In question 2 on the application we ask you to paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions. Please post direct links to places where your community has been notified about this proposal. Furthermore, would it be possible to post a notification on an on-wiki page, such as on Wikidata:Project chat or Wikidata talk:Training? If you have other suggestions for an on-wiki space that will reach your community, please feel free to use them instead if you feel these spaces will not be helpful.
  • Can you provide clarity on the specific mailing lists you are using in addition to what specific accounts or channels on Twitter / WhatsApp are being used for communication? What communities do these channels reach?
  • Because these events are not described as a contest, can you provide an explanation for why prizes are important or necessary to achieve your goals for this event? Could this work be supported without the use of prizes?
  • In your last grant, you reported that 16 editors were able to participate in the event, but only about six editors contributed content according to metrics captured by the Outreach Dashboard. I want to understand what steps you will be taking to encourage or support contributions from more of your participants. This is important because the costs of data and the overall level of funding in this grant is high when the number of participants is estimated to be between 8-15 participants overall.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 22:39, 28 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Response from Benedict Udeh[edit]

hi I JethroBT (WMF), thank you very much for the questions/comments. please find my response below:

  • I'm not sure I understand your first question as this is an individual project but as regards it being possible to post a notification on an on-wiki page, sure its possible.
  • As for communication channels, the project is targeted at adding Nigerian hospitals data as such will be using the Nigerian wikimedian usergroup whatsapp platform as well as the Igbo wikimedian user group whatsapp platforms. will also be using my personal twitter handle, and my whatsapp accounts to communicate in terms of event dates and notifications. I also created an email list from the last events so wil be using that as well. But the major channel of communication will be the whatsapp group that will be created for the project where participants can ask question, raise concerns, and comments. The whatsapp group will be created solely for the purpose of the project if the grants is approved.
  • The proposed event/Editathon is meant to be both training and contest. From the previous events, I come to realise that we tend to get more response in terms of content contributions when there is a competition attached to it.
  • As correctly stated, in the last event, we had few participants that actually contributed content and I believe the reason is because we spent some reasonable amount of time teaching/answering participants questions on how to make queries using SPAQL programing language which in turn made participants focus more on learning SPAQL. also the contest was a bit short more like a 1week contest. To address this issue, I intent to spend more time answering and training participants on how to add content on wikidata. also instead of having just a 1week contest, increase the contest to 3 weeks thereby giving participants more time to make contributions.

Please let me know if you have any more concerns or questions or comments. Benedict Udeh 11:45, 29 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Udehb: Thanks for your response. In order to move forward with a funding decision, I am requesting the following:
  • The communications we are requesting links for are not only about the scheduled event, but about this very proposal. The reason for this is that we ask that applicants provide their community an opportunity to review and provide feedback in a place that is publicly accessible. We are requesting that you provide a link to a relevant on-wiki pages or mailing list where your community has been notified of your proposal. A few examples here include Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria or Talk:Igbo Wikimedians User Group.
  • While we are willing to support prizes for the event, we would like this budget to be more modest. This is because the overall budget for Rapid Grants is limited, and because we want to ensure that the work of editing is primarily a voluntary one, as we can't sustainably support communities that depend on larger prizes to participate. Given that this is a group of about 15 people, a budget of about 435 USD for prizes is too high, and we ask that you limit your prize budget to a total of 100 USD.
  • Thank you for your explanation regarding participation in your last grant report. I would also recommend following up with participants during the three-week period to see if they need support in contributing or using Wikidata to support their continued engagement.
  • The data costs for this event are much higher compared to other events we have funded in Nigeria. Can you explain and provide some information about how you have arrived at a rate of 11.59345 per person/per event for data-related costs? I am also concerned that our grant program may not be able to support data costs that are quite this high associated with an event. Are there ways to reduce the data costs for yourself and participants? I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 19:32, 4 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Additional Response from Benedict Udeh[edit]

hello I JethroBT (WMF), thank you for your questions and recommendations. Please find my response to your above questions/comments below:

  • I did not communicate that initially using an on-wiki page but did that on WhatsApp platform because I thought that wasn't required being that its an individual project. But from our discussion so far I guess I'm wrong which is why I have done that now on both Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria and Talk:Igbo Wikimedians User Group which are the two communities I belong to.
  • I have also reduced the prize budget to a total less than 100 USD though I think that's kind of small but I guess due to the limited budget that will do
  • Thanks for the recommendation as regards following up with participants during the three-week period. As a matter of fact, I intend doing just that if we are to commence with the project.
  • As regards the data costs, of course it can be reduced by reducing the bandwidth which I have done as well.

Thanks once again and hopefully my above response will help in your decision to move forward with the funding but Please let me know if you have any more concerns or questions or comments.

@Udehb: Thanks for these changes, Benedict, and apologies that we're not able to support a larger budget for these needs. I'll be approving this request shortly. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
