Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Wikify Ibadan: Wikidata and SPARQL Training

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Comments from DSaroyan (WMF)[edit]

Hi Johnjoy12, thanks for submitting this grant request and congratulations on your first Wikimedia Foundation grant! I have some questions to clarify the planned activities and proposed budget:

  • Could you provide a more detailed schedule on what kind of training you plan to carry out?
  • Do you have any experience with Wikidata and SPARQL? In addition, have you organized any Wikimedia initiatives in the past?
  • The number of created or improved Wikidata items is 10. This is a small number, given that your training is going to be about Wikidata. I think that you need to reconsider this number if you are planning to train participants on how to edit on Wikidata.
  • How are you going to measure the knowledge of SPARQL after the training, to make sure that you've reached your goal?

Budget:

  • Venue for the events - the costs of the venue is higher from what we usually approve for the similar projects from Nigeria. Could you provide more details on what this cost will include? Additionally, have you considered asking the university to provide a space for free?
  • Router - is this cost for purchasing or renting the router?
  • Data Bundles - how many data bundles do you plan to offer? Please provide a more detailed breakdown.
  • Communications and Graphics - what is the purpose of this expense?

Looking forward to your response. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 12:33, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Response[edit]

Thank you DSaroyan (WMF) for your review and comments. Below are my responses:

  • I have provided a more detailed schedule on what kind of training we planned to carry out on the main page of the grant.
  • Yes, I have experience with Wikidata and a basic understanding of SPARQL. I have been involved in other Wikimedia initiatives and edit-a-thons but I have not organised one that is why I have reached out to User:Samatics and User:DonKevin since they have an excellent understanding of Wikidata and SPARQL.
  • I have increased this number to 100
  • On day 2 of the event participants will be asked to write queries to get information from wikidata under a supervised environment. An evaluation form will also be shared to gauge their level of understanding.

Budget

  • Venue for events: In choice places in Nigeria cost of the venue is higher than others. top universities like LASU, UNILAG and University of Ibadan. Please find the attached here. Yes, I have considered getting a free space but got no headway. I will push harder on this for a future project.
  • Router: It is for purchasing a router that can serve a maximum of 32 persons.
  • Router Bundles: Data bundle is the subscription on the router for participants to connect their devices for the 2 days. The cost of the router and subscription on it will be lower than providing buying data bundle for an individual.
  • Communications and Graphics: I plan to create awareness on campus and social media and this will require banners and digital banners. I also intend to promote it among data scientist and programmers in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Thank you @DSaroyan (WMF): for your questions. Johnjoy12 (talk) 20:44, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Johnjoy12, thanks for your response. I have an additional request regarding the router expenses.
Hello DSaroyan (WMF), I have converted the router purchase to rent. Necessary edit has been made on the main page of the grant. Thank you. Johnjoy12 (talk)
