Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria/“SHE CAN with ICT”

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Hi Olaniyan Olushola, thank you for your efforts to plan this program and submit this grant request. It is great to hear that you have found an organization who can help your community reach tech-savvy women how to edit Wikipedia. We have a few questions about this project:

  • Your community led two training workshops with a mentorship program in January 2016. What worked well and what will you do differently with the trainings and as mentors this time?
Hi KHarold (WMF), thank you for your questions and recommendations. this adopt a user method really worked well but the offline monitoring was insufficient and that we will do it differently as mentors this time. Also from our experienced, we discovered that 1 - 2 days workshop is not enough for training and this is why this is extending over a longer period so that we can gradually teach more advanced wiki skills.
  • How many workshops will each participant attend? We recommend working with fewer participants, but inviting them to multiple workshops each over a time period of several months or a semester. This way you can gradually teach more advanced wiki skills and develop a social environment and camaraderie with participants who come to multiple sessions. Can the workshop series be extended to several months?
We plan to do the training for a period of one month and each participant will attend 8 workshops altogether. i.e 2 workshops per week (Wednesday and Thursday) and of course, it could be extended to several months. Thanks for your brilliant recommendation, we will surely follow it.
  • In the budget table it says that certificates will be given to people who participate fully in the workshops, and that you expect 30 of the 100 people to earn certificates. What does 'participate fully' mean?
By "participate fully", we meant those students that complete the training course. We plan to only award certificate to students that complete the course. We believed that not everyone would be able to complete it and this is why we estimated that at least, 30% of the participants would complete the program and would be awarded a certificate.

  • 2 of the 30 people trained during the workshops held in January 2016 continued editing after the workshops, but have not edited in several months. Can you invite them to participate in this program or participate in social events when volunteers are in Lagos to encourage them to resume editing?
Yes, we plan to invite them. In fact, the 2 editors are females. In a telephone conversation with them recently, they said the major reason why they have not been active is because they are undergoing a compulsory program for all university students in Nigeria called " Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). They started it about 6 months ago and it would be completed by the end of this month and they would resume editing.
  • How many of the trainers/project leaders are women?

We look forward to your responses so that we can learn more about this project. Please let us know if you have questions. --KHarold (WMF) (talk) 17:40, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Currently, none of the trainers/project leaders are women and this is why this project is very important to our community, to recruit female editors who will in turn become a trainers/project leaders in the future. Although we have several female editors as support team but are not experienced enough to lead training or workshop.
Thank you in anticipation of your replyOlaniyan Olushola (talk) 15:23, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request for a Change of End date of this project[edit]

Hi Jtud (WMF).

We are requesting for a change of extension to the end date of this project. We are indeed sorry for this late information, This is due to delay we experienced during the mentorship session of this project.

We will be glad to submit this report on or before 15th of October, 2017. Olaniyan Olushola (talk) 21:30, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Olaniyan Olushola. Thank you for the update. The new report due date is October 15, 2017. Considering all of the open grants are delayed it is a good idea to think carefully about lessons learned for planning timelines in future projects.
