Hablon User Group/International Conference on Multicultural Education, Linguistics, Counselling, and Social Sciences 2019
The Hablon User Group (HUG) participated in the International Conference on Multicultural Education, Linguistics, Counselling, and Social Sciences 2019 (ICMELCSS2019) on October 17-19, 2019 at Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology in Bunawan, Agusan Del Sur in the Philippines and presented a paper entitled "How Philippine-language Editions of Wikipedia Can Assist in Achieving Equality in Indigenous Education".
Abstract of the paper
[edit]Of the 175 living indigenous languages in the Philippines, eight of these have Wikipedia editions.[1] As of July 2019, Wikipedia has editions in Ilokano, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Tagalog, Bikol Central, Cebuano, Waray-Waray and Chavacano de Zamboanga.[2] Wikipedia is a free and online encyclopedia that anyone can use, distribute and edit. Information in Wikipedia is written by volunteers from a neutral point of view and obtained from independent, reliable and verifiable sources.[3] Wikipedia can be accessed using computers and mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets which are either connected to the internet or not connected to the internet.[4] [5][6]These Philippine-language editions of Wikipedia can assist in achieving equality in indigenous education because the information or content is written in indigenous languages which is easier to understand than when it is written in another language.[7] Likewise, these information can be accessed even if the device is not connected to the internet which is useful in localities where internet connection is not good or where libraries or sources of information are scarce.[8][9]
