Wikitech migration to SUL can cause error

A user at en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Auto-creation of a local account failed was unable to log in to new wikis because they had an unattached Wikitech account but the error message was unhelpful. It appears from wikitech:Wikitech/SUL-migration#How? that it's a general issue from 1 October 2024 to 30 January 2025, unless something is improved before then. wikitech:Special:Statistics says 37,605 registered users but I don't know how many are affected. I suggest adding this to Help:Unified login#Conflict resolution, and maybe remove it after 30 January 2025 if the issue appears gone then:

Wikitech is migrating to SUL in 2024–25. If Special:CentralAuth shows an unattached Wikitech account then you may get this error message when you try to log in to a wiki where your account does not already exist:

Auto-creation of a local account failed: Cannot create account: The username is already in use. Please pick another name.

The message is made by MediaWiki:Authmanager-authn-autocreate-failed and MediaWiki:Centralauth-account-unattached-exists. You may see it in the language of the wiki. Try merging the Wikitech account at wikitech:Special:MergeAccount to fix the problem.

The suggested fix worked for the user. I quoted the full English error message to help users who search for it. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:17, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

Attempt for local creation, while having any unattached account, will always fail. I have added the suggestion with minor modification. – Ammarpad (talk) 19:09, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
