International Museum Day 2023/Nigeria

CALL TO IMPROVE THE PRESENCE OF

NIGERIA MUSEUMS ON THE WIKIMEDIA PROJECTS

Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples, especially in a culturally inclined country like Nigeria.

In keeping up with the International Museum Day and this year's focus, we join the global International Museum Day 2023 in partnership with the Nigerian National Museum in celebrating Museum and ensuring we complete and improve the presence of Nigeria Museums on the Wikimedia projects.

"The objective of the International Museum Day (IMD) celebration in Nigeria is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Nigeria Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”

New Museum Definition

For this year's edition there is the new definition for museums that was developed over the past five years and now is ready to become a living benchmark for all our content:

“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”

Sustainability and Wellbeing

Museums are key contributors to the wellbeing and to the sustainable development of communities. As trusted institutions and important threads in shared social fabric, they are uniquely placed to create a cascading effect to foster positive change. Museums contribute to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals from supporting climate action and fostering inclusivity, to tackling social isolation and improving mental health.

The aim is to explore the potential of museums for Sustainability and Wellbeing through three goals from a set from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations:
