International Museum Day 2023
New Museum Definition
For this year's edition there is the new definition for museums that was developed over the past five years and now is ready to become a living benchmark for all our content:
“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”
Sustainability and Wellbeing
Museums are key contributors to the wellbeing and to the sustainable development of communities. As trusted institutions and important threads in shared social fabric, they are uniquely placed to create a cascading effect to foster positive change. Museums contribute to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals from supporting climate action and fostering inclusivity, to tackling social isolation and improving mental health.
The aim is to explore the potential of museums for Sustainability and Wellbeing through three goals from a set from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations:
On May 18th, the aim is to realise the full transformative potential that museums have for sustainable development and wellbeing!
The following geographical maps locate the museums in all participating countries and regions based on Wikidata records. If you want to know which museums already have a Wikipedia article and which do not, as well as the respective quality of the article, you can find out by using the link to the interactive maps below.
Have fun exploring!
The kick-off event GLAM digital on May 18 addresses the new definition of museums and supports the sustainable work of cultural memory in a time shaken by crises. How can objects in collections be preserved and protected for the future? How digital can a museum be in the future? The GLAM Digital event focuses on the process of digital archiving and invites participation.
We thank all the volunteers engaging in our projects and we hope you will continue to make a contribution to free cultural knowledge by adding and completing the Wikimedia projects on topics related to the theme of International Museum Day 2023
"Sustainability and Wellbeing".
The objective of International Museum Day (IMD) is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”
In keeping with Museum Day and this year's focus, we invite you to help us in completing and improving the presence of museums on the Wikimedia projects.
Thank you for participating!
