The Mission of the Pageless

The sans pagEs (abbreviated LSP) is a project, an association and a user group affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation created for users who work on topics related to gender bias, and more generally to diversity (territorial, cultural, linguistic, generational, gender, attitudinal, disability, etc.) within the French-speaking Wikimedia movement. The main objective of the user group is to increase diversity in content and among contributors, and to reduce sexist bias and the gender gap within Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement in general.

Our project page on Wikipedia

Objectives for the year 2023

The sans pagEs carry out activities that are in line with the movement's strategic priorities, and we participate as much as possible in the initiatives proposed and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, the French-speaking charters, and Wikipedia and its sister projects. This involves ensuring fairness in decision-making, coordinating among stakeholders, evaluating, iterating, and adapting.

Sharing our beliefs

At each meeting, we encourage the Wikimedia community to participate and reflect on issues related to the gender gap and diversity. This is understood in the broadest sense: sexual minorities, unique cultures, and silent French-speaking communities.

Encourage engagement

We are expanding our efforts to generate curiosity, interest, and support for our project. The strategy is working because participation is growing, driven by the project director, members of the Committee of the Pageless (8 members based in five countries and three continents), members, our relays, and partners (In brief: the year's results).

Recruit, train and support new members

We recruit women and people interested in gender and intersectionality issues to create a more diverse community. Through our discussions, we encourage them to become aware of biases and representation gaps. We help them acquire the tools that will help them take action.

Promote the autonomy of affiliated User Groups

We can do it at the 2023 French-language Wikiconvention

We continue to support all our French-speaking subgroups and train their members or contributors who wish to set up new projects, building on the success of Blackening Wikipedia.

Our approach is to attract more African groups to replicate the LSP Benin model and facilitate cooperation between similar projects. We guide them toward best practices to empower them in their projects. We are strengthening our relationships with French-speaking universities to teach Wikipedia in class.

Respect each member

All our physical and online events are organized in accordance with our Conviviality Charter, the Facilitator Charter, and the Wikimedia Conviviality Policy to ensure the safety and inclusion of participants. We continue to reflect on the Charter's Consequence Scale at our annual convention.

Expanding our network

We continue to support existing LSP groups (mostly located in Switzerland and France, with a few isolated events in other countries), and to expand geographically by helping new groups emerge. The French Wikiconvention is one of the opportunities to strengthen our relationships with other projects and to launch new initiatives with members located in several African countries and in Quebec.

Amplifying our key messages

We are mobilizing our resources to promote the activities of the sans pagEs to the general public, in the media and on social media, as well as promoting sister projects, in order to encourage greater participation in the projects.

The pageless actively participate in gatherings organized by the movement, such as Wiki Women Camp, Wikimania Singapore, Let's Connect, and Queering Wikipedia. These spaces allow us to share our messages within the community (Our participation in the Movement).

Building for the future

For several years, the sans pagEs have been engaged in a professionalization process to ensure the sustainability of their activities over time. With the hiring of our director Natacha LSP, founder and former president of the sans pagEs, we are amplifying the project's momentum and the structuring of the movement. This is based on the search for and sustainability of financial resources: partnership agreements with Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia France and Wikimedia Switzerland and marketing of participation in events.

In brief: 2023 results

The project has over articles indexed to the project by the end of 2023. During the year, 1,271 articles were contributed to the project on the recent articles page.

According to the dashboards, 133 events gathered nearly 844 participations to contribute (for 2022, the figures were respectively 106 events for 1111 participations and for 2021, 81 programs and 475 participations).

The retention rate calculated based on people registered on the dashboard is approximately 16% at 7 days.

To improve our metrics, we conducted a satisfaction survey for 2023, to which 57 people responded in January 2024.

We are seeing the benefits of professionalization and the hiring of our Natacha LSP director. We have been able to structure the association to expand our activities in Africa and the Caribbean, as well as being able to respond more easily to requests from institutions.

The only downside, which is reflected in the results of the survey conducted at the end of the year in the question "What is the thing you liked least this year: harassment on WP and attacks against the project are explicitly cited by the participants as one of the least appreciated things.

We did not reach our fundraising target outside the movement, although the invoicing of services to institutions increased from CHF 2,985 in 2022 to CHF 6,683 in 2023. This income consists of training services in GLAMs. The search for external funding has been initiated and foundations identified, but the operational level and international development (conferences, mentoring, organization of contribuathons) has been such that it was not possible to do so in 2023.

Activities carried out

The sans pagEs conduct activities year-round online and in-person to recruit, train, contribute, retain, and evaluate.

Office hours and regular appointments

Online

A structured online community, the sans pagEs organize two weekly meetings on Thursdays. From noon to 2 p.m., during Wikimidis, we welcome new members and discuss various issues, often directly related to an editathon in progress (RESET!, Quinzaine des autrices francophones, etc.). In the evening, starting at 7 p.m., we evaluate the latest articles attached to the project during maintenance sessions. Other work is carried out during these sessions, such as wikification, sourcing, or more generally improving articles.

As a reminder, these meetings were welcomed by our community during the pandemic because they allowed us to keep members connected. 2023 was marked by the omnipresence of participants from the new groups located in Africa and Haiti (despite the time difference!)

On the other hand, our members also exchange daily on the project's discussion page, via the Telegram messaging service and on Discord.

Old and new team of Violette and Co

In person

In 2022, we welcomed the return of our in-person activities in Paris, Geneva, and then Meyrin.

In 2023, monthly workshops were organized in Paris at Chez Mona, then at the Violette and Co bookstore, which reopened on October 13 and where we were able to organize a workshop for Pride Month (read the report). The mornings are dedicated to the Wikisource Autrices project.

On Tuesdays, a session is held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Forum Library in Meyrin in Switzerland, organized by Etty_N. All audiences and all levels are welcome. The goal is to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia about the history of women in Switzerland.

Office hours led by Waltercolor were also held at Shadok, in Strasbourg, every Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. during school term time, from September 22 to December 8, 2023.

Since January, a monthly workshop has been set up in Toulouse by Sinkra, on the first Saturday of the month at the Espace Diversités Laïcité. A new theme is addressed each time, such as Women and feminism in the gaming world, Athletic women, Drag world or Women and Catharism.

Many thanks to the organizations that host or have hosted us, and to Wikimedia France, Wikimedia CH and the Wikimedia Foundation, whose grants help us to carry out these activities.

Activities on the Adelphe projects

Commons: The imageless and Drawtober

Les sans images is a project launched in August 2020 by Alacoolwiki which aims to give a face to topics related to gender bias on Wikipedia.

Since 2021, with Drawtober, inspired by Inktober, the sans pagEs have challenged illustrators to create one drawing per day during the month of October. Ohocelot, the originator of the Drawtober project and creator of numerous portraits, was awarded the Illustration Prize and New Contributor of the Year by Wikimedia France at the Wikicamp in Dieppe the following year.

In 2023, at the initiative of ThePortraitLady, an illustration theme will be proposed each month (the monthly Drawtober), in particular in connection with the contribution months and the current editathons. We have also been working on an exhibition project which should see the light of day in 2024.

The year was marked by several debates, particularly on the bistro, where some of the drawings produced and the project were called into question. These lively exchanges, sometimes including virulent messages, cost a lot of energy for the participants and ended up discouraging some. The effects can be seen in the declining participation statistics.

Typically, during events organized by sans pagEs, attendees are encouraged to upload new images to Commons and use existing images.

Map
Witches

This project aims to document the available information on these trials, as well as on the accused and persecuted witches. Approximately 85% of those accused were women, due to the roles they played in daily life (midwives, healers) and the vulnerability of their position at that time. Born in Sion, it made it possible to produce a witch map with wikidata entries. Then a similar academic project was done for Scottland with remarkable results. Natacha_LSP and Ciell, started a witch wikidata project to work more coherently on the wikidata properties needed to describe witch hunts and witch persecutions.

During the Wikimedia Summit, Rosiestep of the Wikimedia Board of Trustees called for a more ambitious project to be launched internationally, which we presented together at the North American Wikimedia Conference. Several African women are interested (including an LSP Board member responsible for Africa Adù229).

In 2023, we organized, in partnership with Wikimedia CH a special witch editathon at the Geneva library, on November 4. A dozen people created more than 55 elements around the theme of the witch trials in Geneva.

As a general rule, in each contribution workshop organized by the sans pagEs, time is allocated to the creation or improvement of Wikidata elements linked to the pages worked on.

FEMNETZ May 5 to 6, 2023 in Stuttgart

Natacha LSP at the Femnetz meeting

Natacha LSP was invited to participate in the annual meeting of the FEMNETZ network of feminist and intersectional Wikipedians in Stuttgart. She presented the birth of the LSP project and its mode of operation based on a feminist and rhizomatic approach, all in German for one hour. Aman Ado presents LSP at RAN2023

Aman ADO presented the Sans PagEs project to about sixty Ivorian Wikimedians from across the country. Entitled "Les sans pagEs en Côte d'Ivoire: Filling the Deficit of Wikipedia Articles on African and Ivorian Women," the presentation aimed to raise awareness among contributors about gender bias in Wikipedia content while seeking to involve as many women from the Ivorian community as possible in the Sans PagEs project in Côte d'Ivoire. AnnePrudence was introduced as the new coordinator of Sans PagEs activities in Abidjan. Read the report.

Capital Filles Meetings, May 15 in Marseille

Anthere spoke to present the sans pagEs at the "Rencontres Capital Filles: le rendez-vous des possibles" (Capital Girls Meetings: the meeting of possibilities). Created in 2012, the Capital association supports young girls from working-class neighborhoods and rural areas. Its work is based on the joint commitment of "Marraines," volunteer collaborators from partner companies and institutions, and teachers who, together, promote the career choices of young girls and their introduction to the business world. This event brought together around ten speakers and was primarily aimed at young girls from several high schools (10th grade), accompanied by representatives of their schools and their sponsors. A great success: a full lecture hall, motivating presentations, and an engaged audience. A few contacts were also made. Read the report.

Member Training

Training support

Beyond providing introductions to article creation and improvement, sans pagEs conducts in-depth work aimed at strengthening the skills of its members. We take advantage of physical meetings and regular online meetings to share our knowledge and invite "experts" in tools such as SWViewer and RTRC (real time recent changes) or projects like Wikisource and Wikiquotes.

Here is a list of examples of topics covered during the Wikimidi in 2023: How to publish news on the project page? How to support a contributor? Primary sources and secondary sources, admissibility? How to create a bibliography? How to retrieve the identifier of an old version (oldid)? Or How to learn Wikidata?

Several members have followed the Wikidata MOOC from Wikimedia France.

Each member responsible for organizing an event is trained to create a project page that outlines the project's goals, participant and work lists, as well as to set up an Outreach dashboard and fundraising. By signing the commitment charter, they explicitly commit to respecting Wikipedia's founding principles and rules, as well as the way LSP organizes events.

In 2023, a training resource was created to ensure a minimum level of information is disseminated during events. It is adapted so that the examples are relevant to the topic.

Labeling

The sans pagEs are continuing their article labeling project, which requires cross-skills in several areas of contribution. Three articles from the project were labeled quality articles: Monica Seles in February, Ida B. Wells in May, and Olive Morris in August. Adele Spitzeder and Femmes en Espagne have the potential to become such.

Eleven other articles were labeled good articles: Samuel R. Delany, Eileen Southern, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, Adoma Akosua, Enheduana, History of women's sport in France, Françoise Gignoux, Gender identity of autistic people, Kösem, Irène l'Athénienne and Tina Strobos. As a reminder, the awarding of these labels is subject to a community vote.

Social Networks

Celinea33 continued to manage the various social networks. Ephemeris are published on Instagram (the instability of Petscan to choose the ephemeris unfortunately sometimes limits activity), and the synchronization of the Facebook and Instagram accounts from the beginning of December 2023 has increased activity on Facebook.

On Twitter/X, newly created articles are systematically tweeted when contributors add them to recent articles. Starting in May 2023, activity on Twitter/X decreased following Elon Musk's acquisition of the platform, which led to the removal of one of the tools we used for publishing and the need to adapt the Framawiki script for recent articles. Until May 2023, tweets were also crossposted to Mastodon, but this functionality has also disappeared.

Activity on other social networks is lower and limited to sharing our events and certain information related to gender bias in general and specifically on Wikipedia. Note the creation of the Threads and Bluesky accounts at the end of 2023.

To reduce gender bias on Wikipedia, events are organized by or in partnership with the sans pagEs or with the participation of the sans pagEs. All month long: Pride Month and Wikiconcours. Friday 8th, 9am-4:40pm, University of Lausanne, Conference on the "Gender Equality and Digital Transformation" project: Editathon "Women in Biology and Medicine". Saturday 16th, 10am-6pm, Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, National Archives: Editathon "Women of the Plaine Commune". Saturday 16th, 2pm-6pm, Toulouse, Cabanis Municipal Library: Wikipedia Workshop "Women in Sports and Rugby". From the 19th to the 23rd, Abidjan: French-speaking Wikiconvention. Saturday 30th (to be confirmed), Paris, Chez Mona 11am-1pm: Wikisource Autrices Workshop. 2pm-6pm: Wikipedia Workshop. Open now! Twitter/X and Instagram remain the two leading platforms in terms of follower numbers, but show slower growth than in 2022. On Twitter/X, this is partly explained by the factors mentioned above and the departure of part of the community following the acquisition of the platform. At the same time, we reactivated our Mastodon page, on which we saw our greatest relative growth in followers (+757%/+371). Our Linkedin page is the second in terms of growth (+397%/+230). In absolute terms, the greatest growth occurred on Twitter/X (+622 followers/+16%) and Instagram (+444 followers/+26%).
