Principles

Glossary

In order to address the current technical barriers in participation of contributors in different projects, it is recommended to invest in developing user experience in our Wikimedia platforms for a wide range of devices to match the needs of our knowledge consumer base along with knowledge curators. For that, we need to evaluate the current barriers in socially or accessibility to suitable learning resources to sustain the community growth, diversification, and participation in different contexts and provide the technological enhancements accordingly.

Investing in equity-centered technologies

  • Improve the user interface for both knowledge consumers and knowledge producers.[1][2][3] For this, we can try new ideas:
    • Augmented reality in cell phone APP
    • Complementary external tools visible within the project interface
  • Collaborate with open source proprietary application companies for cross platform talks for enhanced user experience. [4]
  • A simple and centralized platform should be created for people to discuss partnerships.

Redesigning the platforms for more diversity of people and content experiences

  • Develop friendly interfaces for the easy creation of new language projects especially for languages having formats different than the western languages.[5]
  • Enable language localization of Wikipedia in various languages by empowering local developers to create user interfaces that can be customized to local languages to ensure inclusion.[6]
  • Establish guidelines for personal data collection, usage, access and protection with a controlled centralized platform to collect user data instead of out of the box interface.[7]
  • Create guides and tutorials about specific tools that can be integrated into userpage for easy accessibility.[8]
  • Improve the Interface/Design of main page of Wikipedia to make it user friendly.[9]
  • Develop user interface for disabled people.[10][11]

Modernize Technical Contributor Tooling

  • Provide support for advocacy and awareness for raising free knowledge movement in different departments.[12]
  • Enable independently Governed Capacity Building Unit.[13][14]

Democratizing Participation

  • Develop & implement more open and democratic dialogue spaces, with tools/capacities focused on both the technological and social intrusion.[15]
  • Create a central structure within WMF related to Community Health.[16]
  • Empower volunteers with technological support and scholarships to increase their skills and abilities to sustain movement with new partners and volunteers.[17]
  • Support Kiwix's development for regions lacking internet access or technology.[18][19]
  • Develop user interface for disabled people.[20][21]
  • Enable evaluation from readers and outside people to get analysis of tools and user interface.[22]

Footnotes

  1. We should go towards pleasant/easy User Experience for both readers & contributors. (Wikimedia community in the Philippines, May 2019, product and technology thematic area).
  2. Improve UX for all users. Don't listen only to long-term conservative contributors whose pov is biased because they are experts. (French community at large, July 2019, Product & Technology thematic area).
  3. Spanish community at large, June 2019, Resource allocation thematic area.
  4. We should collaborate with all (open source and proprietary application companies for cross platform talks for enhanced user experience.(Wikimedia community in the Philippines, May 2019, product and technology thematic area).
  5. Develop friendly interfaces for the easy creation of new language projects especially for languages having formats different than the western languages. (Igbo Youth Salon, August 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  6. Enable language localization of Wikipedia in various languages (eg. Swahili), including by empowering local computer developers to create user interfaces that are full customized to local languages to ensure inclusion. (Tanzania Strategy Salon, July 2019, Diversity).
  7. Establish guidelines for personal data collection, usage, access and protection with a controlled centralized platform to collect user data instead of out of the box interface. (ESEAP strategy summit, July 2019, community health thematic area).
  8. Targeted tutorial videos about specific tools (could be included into the contribution interface to avoid having to look it up in too many confusing 'help' pages) (French meet-up, July 2019, capacity building thematic area).
  9. Re-create and consider the elements of Wikipedia’s main page very carefully to invite visitors to contribute and to lead, guide and encourage them to become active participants in the community and to build/improve their skill sets.(Levant Strategy Salon, August 2019, capacity building thematic area).
  10. The WMF should develop access for disabled people (example: develop audio content for blind people) (French Community, July 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  11. Adapt platforms to different groups so that all can use them comfortably. (Igbo Youth Salon, August 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  12. Do Advocacy and awareness raising about free knowledge outside of digital/technological field so that other sections of the population are sensitized to free knowledge issues. (DRC strategy salon, September 2019, Advocacy thematic area).
  13. This Unit should not only oversee the implementation of the recommendations, but also to pave the way for and advise on new capacity-building tools and technologies and to monitor the extent to which capacity-building programs contribute to changing the movement towards strategic direction, while updating this structure to meet the desired objectives.(1:1 Individual Interviews - Arabic Community Conversations, Sept 2019, Capacity building thematic area).
  14. We support the creation of capacity building unit. (Thailand Strategy Salon, August 2019, Capacity building thematic area).
  15. Develop & implement more open and democratic dialogue spaces, with tools/capacities focused on both the technological and social intrusion. Talk pages became obsolete and that contaminates their use and effectiveness (Spanish community, May 2019, Capacity Building thematic area).
  16. Create a central structure within WMF related to Community Health (It is essential to have a centralized structure to support individuals, monitoring, decision-making, reviewing, adopting and transferring it to the public, and applying it to a group of individuals to ensure its long-term feasibility, as well as new and technological technologies that can support individuals with disabilities, but have a passion and passion to participate and join.) (Arabic Community Conversations, September 2019, community health thematic area).
  17. Empower volunteers with technological support and scholarships to increase their skills and abilities. In return, they would help others through the internet, for example, to get more people & societies involved in the movement. (Egypt/Spain salon, July 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  18. In regions lacking internet access or computer equipment, use Kiwix and provide second-hand computers or phone-chips from big companies (Internet access is still an issue, for example in Africa. European Affiliates could pretty easily have access to second-hand equipment and provide them to local User Groups. (French Strategy Salon (Paris), June 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  19. Support Kiwix's development (Egypt/Spain salon, July 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  20. The WMF should develop access for disabled people (example: develop audio content for blind people) (French Community, July 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  21. Adapt platforms to different groups so that all can use them comfortably. (Igbo Youth Salon, August 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  22. The WMF should test its tools with people from outside the community, currently, many people are discouraged by the “hermetical” aspect of the Wikimedia community, which has a big “nerdy” biais. More intuitive and open tools will foster the participation of more diverse people. (French community, July 2019, Diversity thematic area).
