Principles

Glossary

The Wikimedians had a strong opinion about how the content should be prioritized in different focus areas that can have potential strong impact on the world. Community felt that transformation in the practises for this shift can be possible with guidelines and metrics published regularly for measuring content diversity of each linguistic version of Wikipedia with editor community making more concentrated efforts towards the underrepresented indegenous knowledge and content for knowledge equity.

Reaching a self-aware and dynamic structure

  • The content on Wikipedia should be kept in check by the experts of the relevant field and region to avoid deviating from the core facts and keep credibility of the content in check.[1]
  • Help should be made available for quality references for reliability of the content.[2]
  • Enable preservation of indegenous knowledge in different ways[3]
    • Documentation of oral languages
    • Empowering Wiktionary project or creation of new Wikioral project
  • Special efforts to bring indigenous knowledge base to bring the local knowledge of different regions of the world.

Evaluation and Survey

  • Alternative sources of referencing should be researched and this knowledge should be made available to Wikimedians especially from emerging communities who have no alternative sources of referencing of oral knowledge.[4]
  • WMF should survey and publish the statistics periodically to ensure the diversity of content, especially for topics that create an impact in the real world and topics that are relevant for underrepresented communities on the internet.[5]
  • WMF should also publish the guidelines for content diversity to ensure the editor community can get involved in knowledge production that is relevant for marginalized communities and may necessarily not be considered important for global community.[6]

Defining Metrics for content production

  • Enable a system that can define metrics for success in content curation with different milestones and targets.[7]
  • Publish stats to establish a clear map of progress in different focus areas of gap in Wikipedia to show their growth in different languages.[8]
  • Publish the gaps on Wikipedia with list of areas so editor community can work on that area with definite focus.[9]
  • Enable a platform where community can work on lists on top topics and areas of interests from different language communities from different regions.[10]

Footnotes

  1. Administrators and patrollers on the encyclopedia, who are in charge of judging the credibility of information, should be closer to the facts. When judging content about one country, or creating admissibility criteria, natives from this country should be consulted. (Guinea Strategy Salon, June 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  2. Improve help to get quality sources for referencing quality content or make reliability criteria evolve. (Tanzania Strategy Salon, July 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  3. Preserve and document oral languages with projects like Wiki Kouman (content production about local languages of Côte d'Ivoire on the Wiktionary and Lingua Libre).(Côte d'Ivoire Youth Salon, Aug 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  4. Oral information: Let the WMF know and understand that Ghana and other emerging countries have a peculiar situation where most of the content is sourced orally. As such the foundation should provide us with alternative sources for referencing with authentication of oral sources. (OFWA Strategy salon, Aug 2019, Diversity thematic area).
  5. Wikimedia Foundation should publish statistics and guidelines on the diversity of content, user and editors to guide them to unrepresented elements to focus on. (Arabic community conversations, April 2019, Capacity Building thematic area).
  6. Guidelines and metrics for measuring content diversity: It is good for communities and contributors to have a diversity of content that helps to guide views and opinions to be representative, or even debatable, because they help to appreciate and give right to areas that may be marginalized and not really cared for by all. (Arabic community conversations, August/September 2019, Capacity Building thematic area).
  7. Define metrics to quantify Diversity successes in terms of content, then establish targets and milestones.(Arabic community conversations, June 2019, Capacity Building thematic area).
  8. WMF has to publish regular statistics and guidelines for content diversity to showcase of its development, run initiatives to decrease the gender and language gap and ask editors to make more efforts towards unlisted elements to focus more on them. (Egypt/Spain Strategy Salon community conversations, June 2019, Capacity Building thematic area).
  10. Creation of a list of the top topics and areas of interest (most viewed articles) of each linguistic version of Wikipedia (or by country) in order to enhance the quality of the content as well as the expertise needed to write about it. (Morocco Strategy Salon, July 2019, Capacity building thematic area).
