Glossary

For sustainability of our movement infrastructure, the wikimedians across the movement have shared a need for better financial sustainability and support systems for people working on key areas of development in the different regions of the world. The general overview inclines towards empowering the local bodies - affiliates, regional and thematic organizations by assisting them with opportunities of independent growth with leadership, technology/expertise and fundraising for balance and equity in the movement to achieve our strategic goals.

  • Enable affiliates develop legal status in their countries.[9]
  • Creation of regional advocacy hub.[10]
  • Empowering movement’s capacity building via communication and legal department.[11]
  • More efforts need to be done for advocacy and awareness raising about free knowledge outside of digital/technological field so that other sections of the population are sensitized to free knowledge issues.[12]
  • Providing a WMF liaison in each region/geographical zone/linguistic zone for advocacy.

Improve Technical Contributor Engagement

The movement should provide technical infrastructure to facilitate technical volunteer contributors with:

  • Software License's Keys.[13]
  • Allocation of grants for short term tech projects.[14]
  • Better technical documentation about the MediaWiki software.[15]
  • Share technical tools across language versions, especially for sister-projects.[16]
  • Improved access to technological events and projects for non-English speaking communities.
  • Prioritization should be on improving the interface for mobile editing in different wiki projects.[17]

Establish recognition principles for new partners with:

  • Better media coverage about the movement’s brand image, values and different wikimedia project to facilitate the advocacy in a region.[18]
  • Development of tools and infrastructure that align with contemporary institutional practices in communication, so that Wikimedia engagement can more easily fit into organizations’ communication workflows.[19]
  • Regional collaborations with movement partners, allied organizations, thematic organizations must be empowered/ capacity trained as well in order to collaborate with potential partners.[20]
