Porto

Porto or Oporto is the second most important city in Portugal, the capital of the Porto District, and one of the Iberian Peninsula's major urban areas.

Located along the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal, Oporto is one of the oldest European centres, and its core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, as "Historic Centre of Porto, Luiz I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar". The historic center is also a National Monument of Portugal.

Proto-Celtic and Celtic people were among the first known inhabitants of the area, but it gain a bigger importance when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its combined Celtic-Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the possible origin of the name Portugal, based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. In Portuguese, the name of the city includes a definite article: o Porto ("the port" or "the harbor"), which is where its English name "Oporto" comes from.

Culture and Art

The city is an important center for art and culture, with lots of cultural institutions. There are Performing arts institutions like Casa da Música, Cinema Batalha, Coliseu do Porto, Rivoli Theatre (Portugal) or São João National Theatre.

Almeida Garrett Library, located on Palácio de Cristal, is municipal library, with an important exposition space and an auditorium with regular programing. Serralves is a cultural institution, wich includes a contemporary art museum, a park, and a villa, each one an example of contemporary architecture, Modernism, and Art Deco architecture. It's one of the most important cultural centers of Portugal. Livraria Lello is one of the oldest bookstores in Portugal, considered one of the most beautiful library of the world.

There are also the famous bridges, Dom Luís I Bridge Maria Pia Bridge Infante Dom Henrique Bridge as the must be seen.

Venue

Friday and Saturday, the meeting will take place on Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (Q10279509) and Sunday on Pernambuco Institute - Porto Brasil (Q119104191). They are located around 3 km from acomodation, in a 20 / 30 min walk, or by metro, from Trindade Station to Casa da Música Station, and then a 3 min walk.

Accomodation

The WOT Porto Hotel is located on the Rua da Conceição nº 80, 4050-214 Porto, in the center of the city, in the historical and cultural heart. It's located at 600 meters from the Trindade Station, a major hub in the city metro system, and 750 meters form the São Bento station, a raillrow station. Arriving at Porto from the Airport Francisco Sá Carneiro, Metro line E connects the airport to the city centre, namely the Trindade Station.
