About
[edit]Wikimedia projects are based on the assumption of linguistic diversity. They start from a collective effort to make it possible to consult as much information and knowledge in as many languages as possible. As well as facilitating access to the sum of all knowledge, they serve to protect minority or minorised languages.
It is in this context that the Porto Meeting arises, a meeting that aims to promote linguistic diversity in the Wikimedia projects. Around 20 members of various language communities will discuss shared difficulties and opportunities within the Wikimedia framework - also opening the discussion to researchers, academics and other interested parties. A first meeting of this kind was attempted in 2018, although without success, so we are excited that this idea will finally become a reality, also taking into account the experience and value of meetings such as Celtic Knot Conference or Wikimedia CEE Meeting. The objectives of the meeting are:
- Bringing together minority language communities.
- Sharing needs, strategies, projects, experiences.
- Supporting the Iberian minority language communities in concrete actions of technological development in order to continue growing and participating in Wikimedia projects.
- Creating an Iberian network to support Wikimedian minority language communities.
