Access to Private data[edit]

I don't recall any requests for private data, can someone remind me of them and where they were handled? WereSpielChequers (talk) 20:30, 12 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi WSC, these requests have been posted through the R:I but have been handled directly by WMF as they mostly involve the Legal team reviewing them against our privacy policy. I probably shouldn't have listed these projects here (nor those involving technical support) as they didn't undergo a review, despite the fact that I was the primary contact. I'm happy to chat if you want to have some more background on how we are handling these requests. --DarTar (talk) 22:03, 12 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm very happy that legal get to signoff on such requests. But if these are from researchers and for research purposes then I think we should also have a community input into this. I.E. do the potential benefits outweigh any risks and as we've seen in some research requests are there known historic issues which we can brief the researchers about, and I don't recall hearing of research that would have required access to Private data other than the statistic that most editors set an Email (I forget whether it was 60 or 70%). If however these requests for Private data are from Police forces pursuing paedophiles and cyber bullies then I'm happy to leave such things to the lawyers. Wikimania/WikiSym meetings[edit]

If we are moving to meetings at these events then it is important that we get a skype channel for those of us who won't be there. It should be easier to have a meeting where more than half the participants are in one room, but these events are expensive and we shouldn't make participation in a volunteer program conditional on attending an expensive event.
