2019 annual report for San Diego Wikimedians User Group

This page will provide a report of activities which the user group engaged in from 11 August 2018 until 1 August 2019.

Membership[edit]

While there are numerous individuals who have been active on various Wikimedia projects, the number of individuals who have been active with the user group have not changed significantly. One of those active individuals, DrMel (talk · contribs), participated in Wikimedia Summit 2019.

Meetups[edit]

Events have been held during 10 of 12 months in the past reporting year, except November, and January. A wiknic was held in August; meetups occurred in Mission Valley (SEP, FEB), Los Angeles (MAR), and Downtown San Diego (JUL); edit-a-thons occurred in Mira Mesa (OCT), Chula Vista (APR), and Mission Valley (JUN); a tour was taken of Palomar Observatory (MAY); and a staff ride-like event (DEC) was held about the Battle of San Pasqual. Additionally the user group sponsored two events at WCNA2018 (West Coast meetup, edit-a-thon[lower-alpha 1]).

Community outreach[edit]

DrMel has been active in starting a new thematic usergroup, WikiBlind; additionally, she has become an Organizational Strategy Liaison, and in that role has contacted various organizations, to include but not limited to, Girl Scouts San Diego, and Fleet Science Center. Vahidmasrour (talk · contribs) began dialogue with San Diego County Office of Education, with the possibility of teaching teachers on how to utilize Wikipedia in their work to teach students.

Grants[edit]

The user group presently (as of the creation of this report), has one open grant which will close at the end of September 2019. In addition, DrMel is presently closing a grant for WikiBlind.

Trivial observation(s)[edit]

  1. Food was provided, exposing some individuals to Filipino cuisine, specifically Lumpia, for the first time.
