After a thorugh discussion and planning with the recently established Wikiclubs across the Philippines, we decided to collaborate on a project called WikiNights.
WikiNights transforms the quiet hours after dark into vibrant, open-air knowledge creation hubs. This traveling hackathon brings together students, shift workers, gamers, and community members to edit Wikipedia, translate articles, capture oral histories, and document local culture—all under the glow of streetlights and LED strips.
The fisrt Wikiclub to partcipate is WikiClub Cebu, led by QueencityCebu and Bim24.
We will also open this to other communities across the globe as SKAP has been thinking of a collaborative project for a long time with other communities in the ESEAP region and perhaps this is the first one.
Next year, we will invite other communities to document their cities too and explore the rich culture, the oral history at night, the sights, sounds and flavors unique to their cities or towns.
There are a lot of information to learn and things to do in a WikiNights event such as:
NightBites – recipe reels from street-food stalls
NightNoise – city sound samples
NightLights – long-exposure traffic trails
NightSky – star-time lapse + light-pollution data
NightWindows – neon shop-front clips
NightPortraits – light-painting volunteers
NightWalks – 3-h mapping stroll with audio notes
NightData – hourly temperature / lux logs dumped to *Wikidata
There is only one rule in a WikiNights event: Upload before sunrise.
