Pangasinan Edit-A-Thon at the Pangasinan National High School with the ICT Students

On April 28, 2023, a training on Wikimedia projects was held in Lingayen, Pangasinan, Philippines. The training,“Pangasinan Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon: Improving and Promoting the Pangasinan Wikipedia while growing the Pangasinan Wikimedian Community” was an initial phase for The Philippine Digitization of Local Laws and Ordinances and Pangasinan WikiVoyage. It was headed by Jasverenne Ferrer and Kimberly Manuel in training 30 students of Senior High ICT A, ICT B, ICT C from the Pangasinan National High School.

Scanning of Local Laws and Ordinances

The project team meticulously scanned the physical copies of local laws and ordinances obtained from the towns. Using advanced scanning equipment and digital formatting software, the team ensured high-quality digitization to preserve the authenticity and legibility of the documents. Once digitized, the content was meticulously organized and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource. This allowed for easy accessibility, searchability, and dissemination of the digitized materials.

Partnership with Media (Media Launch) and Legal (Legal Mission)

To showcase the accomplishments of the project's first phase and generate wider awareness, a media launch was held last June 1, 2023 attended by media partners --Regional Examiner, Capitol Post, Shareable News, SMNI News, DZRD Radio, iFM Radio. The event served as a platform to disseminate information about the project's goals, outcomes, and potential impact. Through media coverage, press releases, and social media campaigns, the project aimed to engage a broader audience, including citizens, stakeholders, and potential future collaborators.

The legal mission is to help beneficiary citizens to know their rights, know their laws and know where to access them on Wikipedia

The Pangasinan Wikivoyage was envisioned to bolster tourism and enrich Pangasinan's online content on Wikivoyage. The project aimed to provide a detailed travel guide for navigating Pangasinan's diverse towns. Collaborating with various local stakeholders, including businesses, the community underscored the significance of online accessibility, showcasing the dedication of local leadership and public service.

Through this project, we were able to upload more or less 100,000+ characters for Pangasinan Wikivoyage content and was able to create and improve content for more than 40 towns here in Pangasinan.

Wikimedia projects-related events

As Wikimedians, we organize edit a-thons since 2014 ( although not continuously and regularly since Wikimedia Philippines was dissolved ), we build communities and right now we are focused on tapping our networks not only in our community but also in Northern Philippines and across Asia Pacific where small communities in need of missionary assistance, capacity development, sharing of best practices such as policy development, capacity development, membership management, strategy development and building strategic alliances are needed.

1. WikiProject Pangasinan/2014 Pangasinan Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

The Pangasinan Wikipedia Edit-a-thon was a day-long wiki editing event to improve the Pangasinan Wikipedia and served as a follow-up to the WikiProject Pangasinan Outreach project that was conducted last November 2012. The actual edit-a-thon was held at the Malong Building, Pangasinan Capitol in Lingayen, Pangasinan on August 25, 2014. The Pangasinan Wikipedia community was the one who managed the whole event including mobilizing the participants. Wikimedia Philippines volunteers from Manila helped in assisting the participants on wiki editing. This event was solely funded by Wikimedia Philippines.

2. 2nd Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon in Pangasinan The 2nd Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in Pangasinan was a wiki editing event focusing on the improvement of the Pangasinan Wikipedia and the Ilokano Wikipedia that was held at the Capitol Resort Hotel in Lingayen, Pangasinan, Philippines on March 25, 2017. It served as a follow up for the first Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at Pangasinan that was conducted on August 2014. The Pangasinan Wikipedia Community in cooperation with Pangasinan Provincial Government mobilized the participants. The edit-a-thon was actually part of the Pangasinan Digital Influencers' Summit, a two-day event organized by bloggers of Pangasinan and the Provincial Government of Pangasinan. The edit-a-thon was funded by the Wikimedia Foundation through a grant and by the Pangasinan Provincial Government. Prizes and tokens for the edit-a-thon participants were provided by anonymous donors.

Two Wikimedians from Manila helped in managing the edit-a-thon and assisting the participants on wiki editing. They also served as resource speakers for introducing Wikipedia and other Wikimedia online and offline projects.
