Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The Pangasinan Wikivoyage was envisioned to bolster tourism and enrich Pangasinan content on Wikivoyage. The project aimed to provide a detailed travel guide for navigating Pangasinan's diverse towns.

The initiative encompassed several key activities. Community Engagement involved interaction with local leaders and the public, elucidating the project's objectives and benefits. Collaboration with Local Governments and Businesses showcased the advantages of being featured in the Wikivoyage guide, ultimately stimulating the local economy. Content Creation and Curation enlisted community and local volunteers to produce accurate and informative details about attractions, accommodations, dining options, and activities across Pangasinan's towns. Incorporating Local Businesses and utilizing Mapping and Location-Based Services ensured a comprehensive guide, making it easier for tourists to navigate.

Promotion and Awareness Campaigns utilized various platforms, including social media and local newspapers, amplifying the project's reach and engagement. Monitoring and Updating Content was emphasized to maintain accuracy and relevance, actively involving the community for feedback and enhancements.

Overall, the Pangasinan Wikimedian Community aspired to create a reliable travel guide showcasing Pangasinan's attractions. These efforts were directed at boosting tourism, supporting local businesses, and driving economic growth in the region.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Collaboration with local governments and businesses proves to be the most effective strategy in achieving our goal in this project. Engaging local governments offers access to essential data and insights about the region, while partnering with businesses provides on-the-ground knowledge about accommodations, dining, and attractions. This combined information enriches the travel guide, making it more comprehensive and accurate. Furthermore, collaboration allows for a broader and more credible promotion of the project through official channels and business networks, attracting a larger audience and potential visitors. However, it's crucial to approach collaboration with tact and respect. Do build strong, trusting relationships, tailor collaboration plans, and acknowledge contributions. Don't force involvement, neglect effective communication, overburden stakeholders, or disregard concerns and feedback—these could strain the collaboration and impede the project's success.

For this project we were able to improve and create new Wikivoyage pages for the 45 towns (out of 48) in Pangasinan and volunteer partners are still improving and adding contents. A collaborative approach ensures the project benefits from local expertise and enjoys sustained support, contributing significantly to its overall success and impact.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

On our application, we outlined learning priorities. Here are the questions and what we have learned:

Will the towns' tourism sector and economic activity be increased if we create a page for them in Wikivoyage?

  • Based on our collaboration and data analysis, we anticipate a positive impact on the tourism sector and economic activity. Providing comprehensive information about the towns and showcasing local businesses is likely to attract more tourists, resulting in an economic boost for the region.

Will the people appreciate this promotion of their towns and cities?

  • Our outreach and feedback mechanisms indicate that the communities appreciate the promotion of their towns. Having an online presence, especially through a reputable platform like Wikivoyage, is seen as a valuable opportunity to showcase their local culture, attractions, and services to a wider audience.

Will this project be adopted by other provinces?

  • We strongly believe this project can be a model for other provinces.

Will communities continue this project internationally or at least its version of it?

  • The potential for international adoption of this project is promising. The collaborative and open-source nature of Wikimedia projects allows for adaptation and implementation in diverse settings globally. Communities may create their versions, customizing them to suit their regions and fostering a broader initiative to promote tourism and local economies.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

The learning from this project will guide us in several crucial ways. Firstly, it will enable us to refine our strategies and approaches for existing and future projects, enhancing their effectiveness and impact. Secondly, the data and insights will influence our priority setting, helping us identify key areas that need immediate attention or improvement. Additionally, it will inspire new ideas for activities and initiatives that align with the community's needs and aspirations.

We intend to utilize this learning to set specific, achievable goals for the future, ensuring our projects are not only successful but also sustainable and beneficial for the communities we serve. Ultimately, the goal is to leverage this learning for continuous growth, adaptation, and positive transformation in the areas we work within.

12. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? This could include things like a lack of time or resources, or the expertise in your team to collect this data. It could also include difficulties with particular data collection tools.

Yes
