Questions[edit]

I'm pleased to see this page created. I have some questions. (I'm not signing the questions, as some were asked by others before me. I think it would be more useful to build a collection of all questions, independent of attribution.) -Pete Forsyth (talk) 23:08, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pete Forsyth, thank you for your feedback. Please note we have updated the FAQ page with information in response to your questions and feedback.--GFields (WMF) (talk) 22:54, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated, I look forward to reviewing the updates! -Pete Forsyth (talk) 00:37, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for posting these questions, Pete! @GFields (WMF):, thank you for updating the FAQ on behalf of WMF. Unfortunately, a number of questions aren't addressed adequately or at all. Can you respond to them below or communicate if there is a better place to discuss these issues? Megs (talk) 18:28, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@GFields (WMF): and @Megs: Any update on this? Seems there has been little activity on the page or talk page since we discussed ~9 months ago. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 20:15, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I notice as of June 2019 (per an edit by @ERoss (WMF):) that GFields no longer works for WMF. ERoss, can you advise who is currently in charge of Project Glow? -Pete Forsyth (talk) 20:17, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Peteforsyth: I am currently in charge of GLOW. Happy to answers any questions. Melamrawy (WMF) (talk) 22:55, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Section-by-section questions[edit]

1.

2.

  • What was the format in which Google presented "insights into popular search topics on Google for which no or limited local language content exists on Wikipedia"? Is there documentation available? Is the documentation freely licensed?
  • How were the 4,500 articles composed received by the 12 language editions of Wikipedia where they were posted? Were there problems (copyright violation, non-encyclopedic content, etc.), and if so, at what rate, and how was it handled?
  • This document states that WMF did not dictate content edited, but makes no comment on what, if any, role Google played in guiding content decisions. Can that be clarified?

3.

  • Is the analysis of opportunities by country/language available as a resource (or for critique) to others in the movement? Where is it documented?

4.

  • Where is the documentation and specifics of the community consultations?

5.

  • The final section reads like a press release for Google (and, incidentally, for the WMF). Are there any documented facts that can be linked to support the broad claims made here?

General questions[edit]

  • According to the press release (which is not linked here, but probably should be), this project is accompanied by more than $3 million in donations from Google. How does that connect to the work described herein?
  • This project was announced by the fund-raising department. There was another program in 2012 announced by the same department, which ended poorly; the then-executive director stated that the primary lesson was: "At the point when it became clear that this project was not a simple pass-through grant but required programmatic work, the Executive Director should have transferred responsibility for it to a programmatic area." Where do the departmental responsibilities with this project lie, and have they been informed by past partnerships and programs?
  • How is the WMF supporting volunteers, affiliates, and other organizations in replicating the successes of Project Tiger, alongside GLOW?
  • Above all, where are the legal documents defining the organizational relationship between Google, WMF, and the Wikimedia Endowment for this project (and any others)? In the spirit of Open Philanthropy, which WMF generally expects of its grantees and which the executive director endorsed at the November 2018 WikiCite conference, can we expect legal documents and contracts to be posted for public review in a timely fashion?
  • The Wikimedia Endowment is the recipient of $2 million as part of this partnership. There are open strategic questions around the endowment, which make it difficult to assess the claim made in the announcement that it will "strengthen and support Wikipedia and its mission for generations to come." Could those questions be addressed by the leadership of the endowment?
  • Was this page composed by WMF staff? Authorship is unclear, since it was not created by a registered user.
