Talk:Growing Wikimedia in Developing Nations

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Rename[edit]

As pointed out by Renaud Gaudin, although he didn't mention the alternative, please change the name to "Developing Countries" [1], [2].

Sincerly,

Virgilio A. P. Machado

Wikimedia Venezuela (planned)[edit]

Can this working group shed any light at Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Venezuela Wikimedia? The landing page is unclear and provides no contact information, and the links at Wikimedia chapters#Planned chapters and Wikimedia Venezuela are not working. Thanks. ~ Ningauble 23:15, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It would seem that site is reserved for the use of a future Wikimedia Venezuela chapter (NGO). NB: not for Wikipedia content, but to describe the activities and events of that future chapter, cf. the Wikimedia Israel web site. Its existence or non-existence is a WMF issue (they own the master domain), and does not seem to fall within the goals of this working group. Ijon 23:24, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I just thought that the "Chapter Development" section of the workgroup page indicated an interest in the matter. Thanks anyway. ~ Ningauble 23:40, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
sure, we're interested in chapter development. But the question of what to do, technically, with that particular so-far-empty wiki instance is, again, a technical decision of the WMF, and doesn't really have any bearing, one way or another, on the development of a Venezuelan chapter. Once such a chapter is ready, it will certainly get its own wiki, even if this one is deleted. Ijon 12:50, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you are absolutely right. Your subject falls entirely within the scope of the working group. Not only so, but it is considered "key to making progress on the Wikimedia mission". Furthermore, Venezuela is one of only three countries in Latin America, singled out for "fostering the creation" of a chapter. As a member of this group, I apologize for any inconvenience or distress the blunt statement to the contrary might have caused you. Although I can't answer your questions right away, I trust that somebody else will. In any case, I'll return here to check that proper dialog has been established or to give you the best answers I could find to your questions.

Sincerely,

Virgilio A. P. Machado
