New "Wikipedia Content Project" - how to do?
hello! I am a fairly new Wikipedia editor and music enthusiast (currently under the kind mentorship of @GoldRomean and am wondering how the team at Wikipedia can develop an archive that better supports sound archiving. There exists a horrendously unappealing sound archive start at Wikimedia.
I understand that Wikipedia has been largely modelled on encyclopedias and capitalist traditions of knowledge preservations and so is consequently largely text and image-based.
However for many cultures based in rapport-building cultural knowledge is preserved via conversation and oral traditions. Capitalist societies of course contain these essentially human traditions as well.
It would be amazing to be able to preserve and share oral traditions and vanishing soundscapes within this fabulous resource of Wikipedia. I am part of several Wikimedia projects so can ask them as well. I welcome any insights on how we may develop these important archival legacies.
Much thanks & warm regards I&I22 (talk) 11:57, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- @I&I22 I appreciate you contacting me with this significant and well-considered query. You make a great point when you say that a better sound archive is necessary to preserve oral traditions and soundscapes, and it points out a critical area where Wikipedia needs to improve. In order to unite like-minded editors and start creating the resources and policies required to realize this vision, I strongly advise you to think about launching a WikiProject devoted to sound archiving. >^CreativeLibrary460 /access the library revision\ 19:06, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- @CreativeLibrary460 yes! this is exactly what i was thinking...although was also sort of hoping something already existed lol. Am happy to do so - just the interface needs to be much different than the options that exist on Wikipedia which work well for simple texts but not complex searches or archiving or researching. I do not know how to launch a Wikiproject and will look up, but many have contacted me to say there is interest in archiving sounds, and the EDM community is super invested so I know that I am not alone in this concern.
- So far I have been pointed to video2commons soulseek musicbrainz and wikimedia commons sounds but none of them are that great/appealing for longevity and community engagement. Super I will look into all and plan for longevity and beauty of use. I&I22 (talk) 23:09, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- And I am inspired by the idea of rolodexes hahahah anyways will see how that goes! I&I22 (talk) 23:10, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- @I&I22 Glad that you are inspired by the idea of rolodexes. >^CreativeLibrary460 /access the library revision\ 23:16, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
