Latency[edit]

I've played a bit with this. When sending a message to an IRC channel in the web browser being on riot.im, I do not see that message immediately displayed in the IRC client on my phone. And I wonder how to debug that. If anyone has thoughts... --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 13:17, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

People vs Rooms sections in web UI[edit]

The current version of the page mentions "your chat with @appservice-irc:matrix.org" several times. In the web UI I see @appservice-irc:matrix.org listed both under "People" and under "Rooms". This probably welcomes clarification for newbie users like me. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 13:17, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unbridging from freenode[edit]

I tried unbridging #mediawiki from freenode and ran into an issue. I asked in #irc:matrix.org and they recommended I email support at matrix.org, so I did so for #mediawiki and #wikimedia-hackathon. Legoktm (talk) 08:47, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Legoktm, I just unbridged #swviewer room and firstly it was having issue but after sometime it resolved itself. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 12:41, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, weird. This was also like the second time ever I tried using the Matrix room, so it's totally possible I messed up in trying to unlink, but other people also ran into the same unhelpful error message as me. Matrix.org support took care of it for me though once I "verified" my identity with them. Legoktm (talk) 17:54, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've set up a mjolnir instance on Toolforge to help with some of the cross-room spam/abuse we've been seeing lately. Right now it's configured to be active in all the mwstake rooms, we can add it to more if people would like it.

Also if people want their own separate mjolnir instances, I can help set that up too. Legoktm (talk) 08:57, 7 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a shared admin account[edit]

On Libera Chat the software designates the group contacts as room founders so they can adjust ACLs, config, etc. without intervention from network staff. However, on Matrix there's no such enforced namespacing, so channels are owned by a person or two and if you're not that person, you need to reach out to Matrix.org support, asking for them to intervene. It's also a bit problematic to add other users as administrators, because you can't remove them (AFAIK).

I propose we have a shared admin account that is a backup administrator for all Wikimedia Matrix rooms (at least for the room admins who want to add it), to improve the bus factor of our rooms. Legoktm (talk) 05:49, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Looks like a sensible proposal to me. Btw there are some feature requests[1] that will make it easy to manage user permissions on channels that are part of a specific space. So having an account that is admin in all wm-related rooms will make it easier. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 16:21, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Spaces (more specifically, MSC 2962) will actually make shared admin accounts unnecessary - it's basically the Matrix version of Chanserv ACLs. For the time being, though, I agree a shared admin account is a good idea.
(Note that it will not help with the issue that in Matrix you can only lower another user's power level if it's smaller than yours, so the shared account still couldn't de-op other admins.) Tgr (talk) 06:32, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@1997kB has helpfully set up the @wmfgc:matrix.org account, which is admin in most (but not yet all) rooms. We should probably document that account at a page like Matrix.org/Administration or something. Legoktm (talk) 07:35, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
