Regarding this

[edit]

This page was intentionally created as an essay for all projects, not specifically the English Wikipedia. Why is it being categorized and marked as such? --MZMcBride 01:08, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Because it cannot be applied for meta, as far as I understand. Like "For example, if an article is speedily deleted for a reason not explicitly listed in the criteria for speedy deletion but it would almost certainly be deleted via the requests for deletion process anyway, there's little sense in undeleting it." - the meta reality is the opposite. We see English Wikipedia admins speedily delete pages which met no deletion policy and survived later VFD. Intention and realization are different. --Aphaia 01:28, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Certain pieces can probably use work, but the spirit of the policy is a good one that's needed here and elsewhere, in my opinion. Process can be important, but strictly following process just for the sake of doing so is unimportant and unproductive. If certain parts don't apply or need work, this is a wiki. : - ) --MZMcBride 02:06, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
People had become unhappy when polls were closed early in the past, sometimes even a week early. That is why we are making an effort to be strict, so that everybody remembers it. Personally I don't care if a poll is closed 12 minutes early, but we should make it a habit of not rushing. If we are to allow early closure, there is a problem, I hope you are aware, that people may disagree with what "early" means in every case, and it would spur more disputes and make more people unhappy. A simple clear-cut rule is favourable, especially in this multilingual environment: close the poll at the advertised time. Hillgentleman 02:16, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
This page describes the point of view of English Wikipedia, you cannot make it a wikimedia-wide consensus simply by changing the wordings. Participants from other projects (e.g. ja:, zh:, de:, ru:, wikiversity:, wikibooks:, .... ) could give a very different view on this issue.Hillgentleman 02:26, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
