Talk:Watchlist sizes for enwiki 2004-08-11

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

So... can anything be done to reduce massive watchlist size? It is a ROYAL PAIN to cut down one's own watchlist, after a while. +sj+ 05:42, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Do remember to use the link "show and edit complete watchlist" if you want to do large numbers yourself - that's less work for many people. You might want to add a feature request for a bit of javascript to mark all entries for delete, since unchecking entries may be the easiest way sometimes. I'll take requests to delete EVERY entry on my en talk page. I don't guarantee to do it at any specific time and I won't do only some - it's all or nothing. Jamesday 01:52, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I'm pretty aggressive about keeping my watchlist down. I try to stay around 500, and remove old entries when I go above that. I *like* being able to see back farther than one day. +sj+ 02:48, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)

hmm, note the unusual gap around 2200. (: +sj+

More stats[edit]

Thanks for the stats, Jamesday. (I'm a closet Wikistats addict.) I was wondering if you could run these four queries sometime (if you feel like it) to calculate:

  • For all users on enwiki, with >0 edits and >0 items on their watchlists:
    • Average watchlist size
    • Average (watchlist size):(number of edits) ratio
  • Number of enwiki users with >0 edits and 0 items on their watchlists
  • Number/percentage of enwiki users with the "Add pages you edit to your watchlist" preference set

wowie, batman--[edit]

I was mighty interested to see this list and then to note that, at the moment, I have over 1300 articles on my watchlist. I do trim periodically, but not much. Here's my dilemma--and I'd wonder whether other people with these huge lists are in a similar spot--I'm involved in & monitoring "dog articles". There are right now 200 separate dog breed articles in existence, and I've got them all watched to check basic edits as well as conformity to the Dog Breeds Project. I *also* have on my watchlist all of the known breed names that do not yet have articles, which is probably another 300 or so. Plus all of the breed-name variations that are simply redirects--just in case someone decides to remove the redirect. That's probably a couple hundred more, at least. Then all of the dog types (e.g., hound, sheepdog, probably another 50-60), then all of the misc articles related to dogs that might be linked into the Dogs category and its myriad subcategories--dog activities and dogs as pets and famous dogs and dog jobs and dog health and so on--oh, yeah, plus the dog category pages--all the images of dogs that I've uploaded or that I've requested copyright info about and am waiting for reponses--

And that's on top of the usual suspects that most people probably have, maybe a few short hundred: favorite articles, users of interest, things they've edited recently, random articles they've written, featured article candidates they want to see what's happening with.

I don't think I could get my watchlist below 1000 pages, and I'm not sure that I want to. The number of items that actually show up on my daily watchlist is not huge, maybe a couple screens full on a busy day except when I or someone else starts making largescale changes throughout the dog world. So it's not much overhead for the system and, well, just about right for me. Or way too much for me, depending on whether I ever want a real life again.

I knew my watchlist was too large when I loaded it and said to myself "How the f*** did list of people on stamps of Gabon get on my watchlist?" Raul654 00:55, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Where are we[edit]

Anyone who wants to know where they are on this list should ask on the talk page and I'll insert your name. Allow me to be the first victim. Where does my watchlist fit in with the others on enwiki?  ;-) Hall Monitor 23:05, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This page must not be visted too often, eh. Hall Monitor 18:53, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
