Impact of not using the dedicated upload wizard[edit]

Context

When participants upload pictures on Commons for the contest, they have essentially two main routes.

Route 1) Either they do it using the dedicated upload wizard. This can be accessed from the main portal page of the contest (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2020), clicking on the green button ("upload now"). The dedicated upload wizard is called "wlafrica". When you upload images through this system, the images are automatically taggued with a hidden category called "uploaded via Campaign:wlafrica")
In this case, the images uploaded receive a bunch of information, in particular

  • the category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020
  • the category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 in CountryX or Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 with unknown country (depending on whether you indicated the country or not)
  • the category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 to check
  • the category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 without categories IF no additional descriptive category was manually added during the upload process

Route 2) Or, they can do it using the regular upload wizard that can be accessed from the link on the left hand side menu "upload file".
In this case, the images uploaded by default receive as categories...

  • nothing, no categories

Alternatively, contributors may also use a mass upload tool, but the end result is similar to Route 2.

First consequence of using route 2

If the uploader does not manually add the category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020, we have NO WAY to know those images are contributed to the photo contest. Those images are not part of the contest. They are NOT included in the contest (unless some poor soul manually fix everything).
If the uploader does not manually add the category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 from CountryX, or Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 with unknown country, we lose precious information regarding the location where the image taken

So please make sure to use the dedicated upload wizard.

IF one is not using the upload wizard, he should make sure to add the following to ALL images uploaded

{{Wiki Loves Africa 2020}} and [[category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 in CountryX]]

At the closure of the photo contest, nearly 900 images were not taggued in the general category. Which means 900 images were practically not included in the contest.
Some of those were fixed by hand. But we still have 530 "out of the contest" because uploaded without the dedicated wizard and not properly taggued. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2020/Images_checking#Not_tagged_images

Here is an example of such pictures insufficiently taggued

Second consequence of using route 2

Using route 2 is also less interesting from a quality point of view. When using the upload wizard, there is a tricky magic. If no description category was added during the upload process, the system tag them "Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 without categories". Then we can do the work to go through that huge category to try to improve 1) image description with more categories and 2) insertion in wikipedia articles.

But if one upload through the regular upload wizard... we have no way to identify that those images have no categories.
Example of such situation : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Photokadaffi
With image such as https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Motocycliste_avec_Porte_tout.jpg&oldid=411743212
Properly included in the contest. Properly taggued with the country. But we have no way to know it has no descriptive category.
