How to categorise images on Commons for WLA[edit]

All images go here (example 2019) : c:Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2019

Through the upload system, the image will typically be attributed the following categories

  • Visible category:
    • Category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2019 in Cameroon
  • Hidden categories:
    • Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2019
    • Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2019 to check
    • Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2019 without categories
    • Uploaded via Campaign:wlafrica

If the country has not been selected during upload, Category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2019 in Cameroon will be replaced with Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2017 in an unknown country‎. And then someone (a volunteer) will have to go clean up this category one by one. This is a lot of work. So please avoid filling up this category. Do make sure people select a country.

When doing a mass upload or an individual upload, please make sure that the right categories are added. If they are not added, the image will not be counted as WLA image. It will not be considered by the jury either. The absolutely mandatory categories are

  • Category: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2019 in NameOfCountry
  • Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2019

Both categories are needed.

Please do NOT simply upload an image and categorize is Category:Wiki Loves Africa or Category:Wiki Loves Africa 2019. Again, the picture may not be counted as a WLA image and you are giving a lot of work to volunteers who have to fix the poor work afterward. So get things done right from the start. In doubt, ask.

How to describe a WLA image[edit]

Description : please provide a complete REAL description of the image.

Structured data in 2020, we will push for structured data to be added. Try to also add some depicts ([4])

Sources and licences

If you rent a camera, DO remember to change its metadata to refer to you (rather than to the renting company). Choose proper licence (typically cc by sa 4.0). Remember that author and source is not always the same thing...

If you upload photo as part of your local group, consider creating a dedicated template for your Usergroup and using it to categorize images that results from your group activity.
See c:Category:Media supported by Wikimedia France as an exemple. This is the upper category that host all images taken with the support of Wikimedia France. Files are placed in and removed from this category by placing the template Supported by Wikimedia France.
