Talk:Wiki loves Sustainable Development Goals

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Updates in July 2020[edit]

I have just made some updates to the page with regards to the planned virtual edit-a-thon during Global Goals Week. It is spear-headed by Project Everyone and I am assisting them. I have created a dashboard for the event which would monitor edits for the month of September. I think I'll also create a Meetup page for the event, similar to this one here. Would you say that is a good idea? I don't think that we need to create a new "WikiProject SDGs" or would you say so? I am actually confused about when to use Meta and when to use the main space. This page here on Meta somehow would overlap with a WikiProject SDGs, wouldn't it? I think rather than creating a new WikiProject I would prefer to tag onto an existing one. Options might include WikiProject International Development or WikiProject United Nations. EMsmile (talk) 04:17, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fantastic that this is moving forward! To start with the most important of your questions, Meta is used for coordinating across language versions and projects. In fact, Wiki loves Sustainable Development Goals is in the main namespace of Meta. Now, I believe you are referring to English Wikipedia, but that is not a "main space" for Wikimedians. It is of course one of the more active projects, but work does not really stem from there. There doesn't seem to be a WikiProject for SDGs anywhere yet, and for Sustainable development, only on Wikidata and Swedish Wikipedia. So the question whether to start a new one depends on what you would like to coordinate. Ainali talkcontributions 21:28, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Ainali, thanks for clarifying (Meta always confuses me but I'll learn). I don't want to start a new WikiProject for this. What do you think of my suggestion to tag it onto this existing WikiProject United Nations? Secondly, I think I'll have to create a "Meetup" page. Do I understand right that a Meetup page should be created not on its own but to be below one of the WikiProjects? EMsmile (talk) 01:33, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Why cannot this be the project page? The page is mostly a pitch that we should do this, and now when we are, we can archive it as a subpage and make the first page the landing page for the project. And yes, usually meetups connected to a project are created as subpages to them. Ainali talkcontributions 09:57, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that the "Wiki loves SDGs" is a longer term, broader initiative that might entail all sorts of things. Whereas the project of an online edit-a-thon in September is one concrete activity below that. So if anything, it should be a sub-page below the main page. But should it really be on Meta? The edit-a-thon in September is just for the English Wikipedia. Can a meetup page be created below this Meta page? That's also an option. My original plan was to create it under here: WikiProject International Development. EMsmile (talk) 10:15, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was under impression this project is exactly what Ad had in mind when starting the page. And you are right, if the September event is targeted for English Wikipedia, better create pages there, and your suggestion looks like it could work. Go for it! No, Ad wanted a several year long initiative whereas this project is just for the big edit-a-thon during Global Goals Week in September. - I have now created the Meetup page for the edit-a-thon in September here. Head over there and continue to talk to me on the talk page, for anyone who's interested. EMsmile (talk) 14:51, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think we'll have a chance to get a central notice banner approved? It could be just during the week of Global Goals Week (19-26 September). I see one has to request it here. We probably need to do a bit more planning work first before putting in the request. Does anyone have experience with such central notice banners? EMsmile (talk) 02:17, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's not impossible. But then we need to put some content up soon and start drafting those. Alternatives if that does not work are also trying to get a banner on the local wiki where we are active. Ainali talkcontributions 09:59, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
