Connect article story with or without success[edit]

1. On File:Wikidata_storyboard_connect_article1.png it may make sense to offer:
Enter URL of Wikipedia page:
or enter language and search for page here:

In most cases the wikipedia editor will already have opened the page she or he intends to connect to, reducing the connection to a simple copy and paste operation would be convenient.

2. On the same step: The option to search or create new on wikidata could be removed here. In the majority of cases, for the majority of users, this is a confusing option and requires serious background knowledge. It could less obtrusivley be handled in two ways: a) by adding a pseudolanguage option "Wikidata" to the list of existing Wikipedia-versions for direct access for specialists, and b) by offering it more explicitly should the search fail (see point 4 below).

3. On File:Wikidata_storyboard_connect_article2.png the text "these other links have been found and will be added" should read "these other links have been found and will also be added" or perhaps better: "these other links are are already connected to the link above".

4. On "Connect Wikipedia page to Wikidata, no match found", "3: no matching item found on Wikidata; user can go search further on Wikidata or create item on Wikidata": The option to search on wikidata should exclusively be offered here, simplifying normal operation and only minimally affected the special case of connected to existing wikidata items

I am going to comment on your post, because I don't agree with all of the points you are making.
  1. In the demo repo when an user adds an site link, there is an generic text "specify site" displayed in the first parameter and "specify page" in the second parameter (see [1]). Those general texts disappear when the user starts to type into those parameters. I am assuming that this will be the case in the storyboard as-well. So, the current sentence "Find Wikipedia page in other language" should be enough, without asking the user to enter an language like you are suggesting with the sentence "enter language and search for page here".
  2. There is one statement I disagree with here and one that I agree with.
  • I disagree that the option "create a new item" should be removed. There is one scenario in particular where this link is useful. The user has found two (or more) articles in different languages and want's to link them. Neither of the articles have any interlanguage links. So, in order to link those articles, the user needs to create a new item, add the interlanguage links to it and then the links are displayed on both pages.
  • I agree that only users who have read the Glossary know what the link "Create a new item" refers to. So, ideally, we need to rephrase the link so even those that have not heard of an item know where the link goes.
3. Agreed.
4. Disagree. There should be two options here. One to search on Wikidata and the second to add an item. Like I pointed out previously in this post, there are articles out there in different languages where neither one of them has any interlanguage links. In those cases, the only way to link those pages is to add an item to Wikidata and add the interlanguage links to it.

Edit interlanguage links[edit]

1. Step 2, File:Wikidata_storyboards_editlinks-dialog.png: The first bottom option should be "Add language link" or "Add link" or simply "Add", but not "Add language". The editor cannot add a language, only a link.

2. Edit and Remove need to be separated by sufficient whitespace to allow touch operation.

why restrict the list of languages ?[edit]

The list of languages used is based on the languages that are actively involved in a Wikimedia project. There is no need for such a restriction and there are good reasons to go beyond the actively supported languages. Thanks, 188.207.231.14 09:15, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comments by Jarry1250[edit]

  • Adding a language link is a minority concept; perhaps "add" should be put on the drop down and not displayed in collapsed view (the section is expanded by default anyway so it makes little practical difference I know, but it seems to break the current sidebar paradigm to have the link displayed next tot he header name).
  • Why does the unnamed "article name" input appear to be a dropdown?
  • What does "search" do? What does "create new item" do? These are very non-obvious.
  • Does the user really care about what other language links will be auto-added at the same time? Jarry1250 (talk) 15:17, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Makes sense to put "add" in the expanded view.
  • It should be an autocomplete input box and not a dropdown.
  • We'll need some tooltips, at least, and perhaps some other changes to make them more clear.
  • I think they do. Otherwise, some folks might be confused when the go to add one link, then a bunch more get automatically added. We'll have to let them know and make sure they agree to add the rest of the links.
