Updating problem

[edit]

Sorry, I do not know if you're the right person but I don't know where to turn. I tried to update the italian FAQ page but having used the translation tool the result is a page with the right translation but a wrong format, as you can see at the bottom of the page. What was wrong in my job?? Thanks. --Ermanon (talk) 08:19, 18 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey :) I just asked and the problem is that there was a space in the closing nowiki tag. It's been fixed now by Niklas. Thanks for your work translating that page! --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 08:36, 18 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi there,

I understand that the QR code logo didn't make the shortlist (I didn't know there was one, in fact), but at 33 entries, I don't see a clear number limit (such as a round number, say 30) and one more wouldn't do much harm imo. Besides (and most importantly) even being introduced after all the others, some votes have already been cast for it, so it clearly shows some potential, to the point that it has amassed more votes than several of the other proposals. I beg you to reconsider the removal from the voting list, since the collective vote is the best way to gauge potential for widespread support, rather than decisions made by a few (however smart!) people. Cheers, Waldir (talk) 07:58, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Waldir! Thank you for your enthusiasm -- especially since the logo is my own creation. But I have to admit it was not meant entirely serious -- as a logo it has certain shortcomings, like it doesn't work very small, very big, it is not really memorizable (just think about the situations where someone changes it for fun with another QR -- not something that would be easily noticeable). So I do think that the QR will have a number of places where it can be used -- but not as the logo representing the whole project. --denny (talk) 08:58, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Too bad. I quite liked the concept. But I understand the shortcomings. There are plenty of good proposals anyway, so I'm sure the end result won't be hurt by not having this in the options. Cheers, Waldir (talk) 09:20, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Office hours date

[edit]

It looks like there was an odd series of edits to the date of the next Wikidata office hours, changing from Tuesday, July 19 to Thursday, July 19 to Thursday, July 18. And July 18 is a Wednesday. Could you please clarify what the actual date is? Thanks. --Yair rand (talk) 21:00, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Übersetzung der Wikidata-Seite aktuell halten

[edit]

Was meinst du genau mit Übersetzungsstrings anpassen? Was muss genau gemacht werden? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 09:56, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
--Michawiki (talk) 11:44, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Global notice

[edit]

The Global notice about the rollout of the first phase of the WikiData was apparently sent to every project, including non-Wikipedia ones. Was this deliberate? If so, does this mean that it will also be rolled out on non-Wikipedia projects? --Yair rand (talk) 15:34, 10 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes this was deliberate :) At the beginning we will focus on Wikipedia. But in the future the sister projects are of course also welcome to use Wikidata. Have you already seen this page? There we're collecting use-cases for Wikidata that go beyond Wikipedia. Feel free to add and expand. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:31, 10 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata & Wiktionary

[edit]

Wiktionaries contain, for most, data (translantions) which should be the the same in A-->B & in B-->A. Does Wikidata takes into account the Wiktionary projects ?

Sorry if I guess it's not the case... I'm used to the fact that the Fundation is forgetting all projects other than en.wp. (sad) --ArséniureDeGallium (talk) 17:31, 10 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hey :) We are concentrating on Wikipedia at the beginning but we are keeping other projects in mind during development. It should be possible to expand this to Wiktionaries later for example. Check out Wikidata/Notes/Future for example. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:34, 11 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Numbers of Populations

[edit]

Lydia, I am missing some introduction into the Wikidata project. I did some translation, but that's not my favorite. I still belive wd is a relational sql database. I see an nice data collection of cities of the planet and their historical population number. When viewing articles about cities and town history, only some historical data can be found. I think about a table containing columns like "city, year, population, part". Diagrams of all the data show were the world was and is growing. It also can deliver results proofing articles content. Were "part=total" it is the total population number. Were "part=" should also be used as male, female, retired, unemployed, older than n, younger than n, etc. City and part should be codes to link on an declaration table. Is this already existing? --Hans Haase (talk) 12:11, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikispecies and Wikidata

[edit]

Hello, I've added a link to the Future page. It would be very nice if someone of the team could speak with Wikispecies people to clarify what they should do and expect from Wikidata. All species data should be imported from Wikipedias' infoboxes in second/third phase, but this must be coordinated in some way, also with Wikispecies which is the natural provider of this sort of data. --Nemo 10:52, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Importing of content is nothing the dev team will do. I am happy to facilitate discussions around it of course. I don't think it makes sense yet however as the ability to store such things is still not ready. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:04, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Question about Wikidata

[edit]

Hi, I'm sysop from minwiki, we're not yet have any bureucrate. So, if any bots make some editing without a flag, I have warn them to ask a bot flag on meta. Considering to wikidata, is it necessary now what I have done? Kind regards,  Ę-oиė  >>> 19:19, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

It is probably a good idea to still ask them to get a bot-flag if they edit on your Wikipedia. I assume even when Wikidata is rolled out everywhere there will still be some bots doing this work for a while. There are some articles that can't be transferred to Wikidata and for them these bots are still useful. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 19:36, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh, okay. Thanks for your advice. Nice to have you around Wikidata. Have a nice day.  Ę-oиė  >>> 08:03, 22 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

A proposal for Wikidata

[edit]

First of all, I hope that I write in an approriate place.

The only knowledge base I knew before the foundation of Wikidata was Wolfram Alpha, and it displays subject Wikipedia page hits history. Now AFAIK all the Wikimedia projects pages hits statistics are stored on a third-party server. I think it'll be quite useful to display or maybe even store it at Wikidata and it seems to be not so complicated as infobox data upload.

What do you think about this? Ain92 (talk) 19:50, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

It'll be possible to store such data in the future, yes. If the Wikidata community wants it or not is of course up to them. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 09:43, 22 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hallo Lydia!

Sorry! --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 08:18, 23 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Possible mix-up of FAQ pages?

[edit]

Dear Lydia,

Could there possibly be a mix-up between one FAQ page and another?

The entry page links to the former, but it seems that the latter contains the 'high-level' subjects more fitting to the introductory purpose.

What is your opinion about that?

Moreover: the first-mentioned FAQ page is not supported by the translation tool.

Kind regards, Vinkje83 (talk) 01:35, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey :) The whole about page needs to be reworked in my opinion. The difference between the two FAQs is that one is for the actual project and the other was created at the beginning to answer a lot of the questions that came up during initial development. Do you want to work on improving the about page? I'd really appreciate that. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:51, 5 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply. I saw your request here. My guess is that the link should be Special:MyLanguage/Help:FAQ. Yet another problem with this FAQ page is, that it is not included in the translation tool. As a consequence the Dutch version can be edited completely independently from the English-language original. Who is the person to be informed about that omission?
I have started using Wikidata relatively recently, and I don't yet know much about it. I can provide translation of explanatory text pages into Dutch, but if the English original contains rubbish, so will the translation! I have no knowledge about the project. Those pages are necessary for me to read, but I am lacking the background needed to do the writing.
Greetings, Vinkje83 (talk) 21:08, 6 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
The best place to discuss it I think is on the discussion page of the FAQ :) --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:04, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata auf Startseite

[edit]

--Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:03, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Danke. vielmals. --Eruedin (talk) 14:42, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

About Wikidata on minwiki

[edit]

Hi Lydia,

Why if I add label on Wikidata and then add a link to minwiki at "List of pages linked to this item" and go to minwiki then remove interwiki article on that, the language link on the sidebar not came out? Can you explain this situation? Thanks in advance.  Ę-oиė  >>> 16:29, 10 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Do they show up when you add ?action=purge to the url? If so it is a known bug. We are working on it. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:37, 10 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ehm.. I don't know what happened, but working now. Even without purge (deleting cache) to the page. Anyway, thanks for your response. I will report it if happen again.  Ę-oиė  >>> 18:20, 10 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

It's happen again on minwiki on min:1774. I add the label, the description and the link to Wikidata on item d:Q7697 but when I remove interwiki on that page, the language link on the sidebar not shown up even when I clear the cache (purge). And it's happen too on idwiki id:Elang-laut dada-putih on item d:Q45974. Any advice? Thanks in advance.  Ę-oиė  >>> 13:13, 12 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I just purged both pages and it worked. Did you do it using ?action=purge? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 14:17, 12 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Nope... just push Ctrl + F5 on Fox. Anyway, it should automatically, isn't it? Why must purge the pages to view that? How the other known about this, to purge before can view?  Ę-oиė  >>> 15:44, 12 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes it definitely needs to happen automatically. We're working on that but there is a bug at the moment. Sorry. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 15:50, 12 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Help test better mass message delivery

[edit]

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new parser function. For example, or . For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:25, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well, for one thing, the delivery of the WikiData newsletter was interrupted by a subsequent delivery of the Signpost so not everyone received it. That's a glitch that I hope doesn't happen again. Liz (talk) 17:17, 3 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Beginning of MassMessage, end of EdwardsBot

[edit]

Hi. You're being contacted as you're listed as an EdwardsBot user.

MassMessage has been deployed to all Wikimedia wikis. For help using the new tool, please check out its help page or drop a note on Meta-Wiki.

With over 400,000 edits to Wikimedia wikis, EdwardsBot has served us well; however EdwardsBot will no longer perform local or global message delivery after December 31, 2013.

A huge thanks to Legoktm, Reedy, Aaron Schulz and everyone else who helped to get MassMessage deployed. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:36, 22 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Help decide the future of Wikimania

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

With thanks,

Translation administrator and admin rights on test.wikidata

[edit]

Hi. I could use the flag of Admin and translations administrator on test.wikidata. These flags I need to test all the possibilities allowed by the extension translate this because I have to check if the extension translate presents similar abnormalities and / or different to those that are present on test.wikipedia to try to understand the causes. The problems of test.wikipedia I reported to phabricator. I'm an admin on it.wikiversity and test2.Wikipedia and translations administrator Meta Wikispecies Wikidata and Test.wikipedia and I have great experience in the use of these two flags. Thanks and regards (sorry if I have not written on Wikidata but would not let me load flow) --Samuele2002 (Chiedi pure!) 15:57, 25 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I believe you need someone who is a bureaucrat on test.wikidata for this. I can't do it, sorry. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 09:39, 27 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hallo Lydia,

Herzliche Grüße --Udo T. (talk) 11:55, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I have simple script from User:Matěj Suchánek for removing same-title interwiki. Some languages are done: cs, sk and smallest wiktionaries. JAn Dudík (talk) 13:41, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hallo Udo :)
--Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:40, 27 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

The TWUG on space.wmflabs.org

[edit]

Hello Lydia Pintscher

A few months ago, WMF opened a new discussion space. Since our user group has some difficulties to communicate (not everyone sees the messages that are posted on Talk:Wiktionary/Tremendous_Wiktionary_User_Group), I asked for a dedicated forum for the TWUG to be opened. It's happening here (there is no topic so far).

From now on, I invite you to follow the category to be informed as soon as a new topic is created. Pamputt (talk) 18:44, 16 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

News from the Tremendous Wiktionary User Group

[edit]

Hello!

I let you this message because you are part of the (very dynamic) Tremendous Wiktionary User Group!

As the process of name change is ongoing for the Wikimedia Foundation, I invite you to participate to a collective opinion from the user group. There is also a proposal for a communique directed to the WMF. You are welcome to discuss it too. I imagine you may also express your opinion through other canals but your inputs are still welcome! Thank you in advance! Noé (talk) 15:11, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Organization directory hosted by WMF?

[edit]

Hi, Lydia et al.:

What would you say to someone looking for a "Wikiorg" project that would invite organizations all over the world to maintain data about their organization in something like Wikidata while also providing a more user-friendly search and query capability than I can find currently? This may also be extended to provide an organization summary in a standard format, one small page max with optional links elsewhere.

I'm the Secretary of PeaceWorks Kansas City[1], which years ago created a Community Organization Directory for the w:Kansas City metropolitan area. Unfortunately, that directory has not been maintained in recent years and cannot easily be queried. I've suggested we use Wikidata to open the maintenance to everyone. However, to do that, we'd need better documentation than we have right now. I could create the documentation if I had consensus on what data elements to use, etc.

There is some mild urgency right now, because the w:International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is working to use the January 22 Entry into Force of the w:Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as a target event to amplify their organizing efforts, pushing non-parties to join. This includes their Cities Appeal. I've suggested to PeaceWorks Kansas City that we update our organization directory as part of working to strengthen our ties with other local organizations with compatible missions.

What do you think? Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 18:00, 11 November 2020 (UTC) (aka Spencer Graves).Reply

p.s. On an unrelated note, ... doesn't work here, see, e.g., Template:Cite Q.

Hi Spencer :) Good to hear from you! At first glance, it looks to me like this data might be best stored in a dedicated Wikibase instance and connected to Wikidata where possible? Wikibase is the software running under the hood of Wikidata. You can learn more about it at http://wikiba.se. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:10, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Posters !

[edit]

Hello Lydia, nice to bump in you again. I just noticed the Wikimania 2018's Wikidata poster was your creation. I wonder if you shared the source somewhere, as an editable file. There is naturally -File:Lexeme_data_model.svg which is available already, but the whole poster would be interesting as well. PS: Lingualibre.org is progressing well, reaching 1000 audios/day now, and expanding to India. In coming year Wikidata & LinguaLibre may gain to get closer, but this is for another day. Best wishes! Yug (talk) 18:12, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey Yug :) Great to hear. Yes I have the source of the file. It's a Google Drive diagram. Which address should I share it with? You can email me at lydia.pintscher at wikimedia.de --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:30, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Data Quality on wikidata

[edit]

Hello Lydia, I saw your presentation on data quality and, as one of the "users" of that data (with Open history map, a project I presented the session right before yours: [2021:Submissions/Open_History_Map-Contextualizing_in_the_past_with_modern_tools]) and, potentially, as in the future one of the contributors of automated data entry I would love to be part of the discussion on feedback loops on data quality both on wikidata as well as on SDC, where we found, importing some of the metadata, an great amount of strange data.

Thank you

--Mmo (talk) 09:08, 18 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot! I will send you an email. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:05, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Making discussions on Wikiprojects more visible

[edit]

Hey Lydia, after one recent post on WikiProject Ontology from me got little engagement I was thinking about how we could make discussions on Wikiprojects more visible. It seems to me like having more discussions on Wikiprojects like WikiProject Ontology would be central to solving some issues that Wikidata currently has with it's ontology. I was thinking that it might make sense to include new discussions in Wikiprojects in the Wikidata weekly summary. What do you think? ChristianKl22:04, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think this is a great idea. I've also put Arian on prototyping a way to make Wikiprojects more visible since this was also identified as one of the big levers at the Data Quality Days. Would you be up for a chat with Arian when he's further along with his work? Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:34, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Enabling the custom SPARQL endpoint to WQS and WCQS

[edit]

Hi Lydia, I asked briefly after your Wikidata Query Service presentation in Wikimania about howto enable external sparql endpoints to WQS and WCQS. Basically process is to create Phabricator ticket for enabling it so here it is ( https://quarry.wmcloud.org/query/85417 ). This endpoint is custom endpoint for data in tooldb running at Wikimedia labs. It would be great to get enabling forward. --Zache (talk) 11:31, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Zache! It seems you copied the wrong link. Can you give me the right one? Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 14:31, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
