Do not change semantics of interlanguage links in Wikidata[edit]

Why not turn this around, within Wikidata from:

  • [[en:Berlin]] is not a language link but links internally to the item that is linked to the English Wikipedia article on Berlin
  • [[enwiki:Berlin]] is a link to the English Wikipedia article on Berlin

to:

  • [[en:Berlin]] is a link to the English Wikipedia article on Berlin
  • [[enwiki:Berlin]] is not a language link but links internally to the item that is linked to the English Wikipedia article on Berlin

and (within a Wikipedia) from:

  • [[wikidata:Q42]] links to the item Q42 on Wikidata
  • [[data:en:Berlin]] links to the item that is linked to the English Wikipedia article on Berlin
  • [[wikidata:User:Foo]] links to the page with the title User:Foo on Wikidata

to:

  • [[wikidata:Q42]] links to the item Q42 on Wikidata
  • [[wikidata:enwiki:Berlin]] links to the item that is linked to the English Wikipedia article on Berlin
  • [[wikidata:User:Foo]] links to the page with the title User:Foo on Wikidata

Switching the semantics of the codes between Wikipedia and Wikidata to have opposite meaning seems to me to cause unnecessary confusion.

Whereas this would increase the consistency with Wikipedia, it would be actually inconsistent with all other Wikimedia projects. Within the other multilingual projects the simple language code points to the language version of that project (i.e. de on ewiktionary points to dewiktionary, not dewikipedia). That is why we have written the draft this way around instead of the other. --Denny Vrandečić (WMDE) (talk) 16:22, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also it is much easier and more consistent to implement, as existing functionality in the MediaWiki linker already does half of that job (which is why it is so consistent with the other projects: we just take the existing code). --Denny Vrandečić (WMDE) (talk) 16:33, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you are correct about wiktionary and wikisource etc., I see that. It is probably too late for consistency here, OK. I keep wondering about the need for "data:en:Berlin" rather than "wikidata:en:Berlin" but I guess you have thought about that as well... :-) G.Hagedorn (talk) 17:00, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
