A meeting in January 2009 ?[edit]

Hello! I was wondering if it would be useful to do a meeting in January? Is there enough points to be discussed to organize one? The non-official Québec's chapter will have their first meeting at Laval University in Quebec City on January 10th or 17th and I'll be there to see what can we do for WMC. Perhaps, our WMC online meeting would be a good opportunity to discuss the latest proposal-laws, to have a summary of Québec's meeting and also to know each other! Let me know if you are interested. Best ragards. --Antaya 07:01, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would attend an online meeting. I've suggested that we submit the bylaws to the WMF on February 15, so an online meeting in mid January should let us iron out what we have to get done by then. --Arctic.gnome 20:00, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Same here. I would attend an online meeting. Ktsquare 00:31, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IRC Meeting for 8PM EST (20:00EST)[edit]

Here is a proposal for an IRC meeting at 8PM on February 11. It's just an informal call at this time, so we can discuss what needs to be done, by who, and what the timeframes are. If I remember correctly, there is an IRC channel for WM-Can already. Please let us know if you want to attend, or if you can't make the time, day and time you would be able to. Historybuff 18:54, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm about to send out a message to the people who expressed interest over email for a meeting next Wednesday to discuss the same thing. I would prefer it to be over something with both voice and text, like Skype, because voice is way easier for conversions IMHO, but if not enough people can do that, then the IRC channel is fine. The time will have to be at least 9PM eastern time so that people in the pacific time zone have a chance to get home from work before it starts. --Arctic.gnome 20:12, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Institut du Nouveau Monde[edit]

Hello guys,

I just got this email from Wikimedia France :

  • (French) : je suis vice-président de Wikimédia France et nous avons reçu un mail de l'institut du nouveau monde, à Montréal cherchant un intervenant pour une conférence (l'institut du nouveau monde, à Montréal le 29 août). Visiblement Wikimedia Canada est trop anglophone et ils n'ont pas de conférencier francophone. Es-tu intéressé ? Je peux te transmettre le mail si tu veux. Julien.
  • (English) (automatic translation) : I am vice-president of Wikimedia France and we received a mail from the Institut du Nouveau Monde in Montreal looking for a speaker for a conference (the Institut du Nouveau Monde in Montreal August 29). Wikimedia Canada is obviously too much English and they have no French speaker. Are you interested? I can send you email if you want. Julien.

What do you guys think about this? Is it too early to speak in the name of Wikimedia Canada ? Let me know. Antaya 04:21, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's never too early to foster a relationship between WMCA and the local supporters. I'm sure WMCA has french speakers and I recall one of them lives in the Montreal area. They can represent on WMCA's behalf. OhanaUnitedTalk page 13:43, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is not yet a Wikimedia Canada in who's name you could speak, but you have certainly done enough work to speak as "one of the organizers" of the future Wikimedia Canada. I'd also remind them that the current draft of our bylaws guarantees francophone representation on the board of directors. --Arctic.gnome 14:17, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania[edit]

Is anyone besides me planning to be in Buenos Aires for Wikimania? Eclecticology 04:37, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's out of my price range this year, I'm hoping by next year I'll have a stable enough income to go; and by then we'll hopefully be registered with WMF. If you get to go this year, I hope you have fun and come back with a lot of useful advice for us! --Arctic.gnome 22:33, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian government[edit]

When one looks at literature one quickly sees that stuff created by the Canadian governement is not in the creative commons. I think we would do well to lobby our government to change this.Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 04:51, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • A good amount of it is in the public domain by default, but it would be worth petitioning the government to release more of it, as it has been a trend of late for governments to open up a number of their records. I don't see them releasing it under creative commons though, mainly because they may not view it as being in their self-interest, as much as the public may wish otherwise. BTW here is a page that describes copyright issues [1]Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 02:48, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
FYI photos in the on-line collection of the National Archives are often marked "Public domain" already.Skookum1 21:18, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'd really like the House of Commons to put its official photos of MPs into cc-by-sa so we wouldn't have to illustrate our politician BLPs with photos taken on the fly as someone passed a member on the street. Arctic.gnome 20:27, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Canada[edit]

I am interested in donating to Wikipedia but would prefer to donate to a local chapter. Is there still a push to get one up and running? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 14:04, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Same here - I'd like to make a tax deductable donation in Canada. I'll try to check back, but please let me know when this is possible. - Themightyquill 15:57, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay will do. It will probably take another year to get charity status but will put send you a not when we do. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 18:43, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2011 in Montréal ?[edit]

Hello all, just want to let you know that Montréal is in good position for bids of Wikimania 2011. It would be a good thing that Wikimedia Canada exist on that event! m:Wikimania 2011/Bids/Montréal. Thanks. Antaya 06:34, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I agree. I think the previous group who were interested in getting WM Canada up and running are now on to other things. Thus we need new people who are interested in carrying on with the attempt.Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 17:03, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2010 in Gdansk[edit]

Hello! I wanted to point you out to the opening call for sponsorhip applications for Wikimania 2010 in Gdansk, Poland. You can find it here: http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarships and the application form is here: https://wm10schols.wikimedia.org/. It would be great if some of the people involved in the process of thinking about a Canada Chapter can make it to Wikimania! Looking forward to meeting you there, I also want to point out that all members of the Chapters Committee are here if you need help with anything. Cheers notafish }<';> 21:53, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lawyer[edit]

Is anyone currently involved a lawyer in Canada? It is always good to have one on board. A freind of mine who is a corporate lawyer is interesting in becoming involved and helping us.--Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:02, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name change[edit]

I was looking at the example of Wiki UK as per here [[2]]. They did not incorporate as Wikimedia UK due to legal issues of independence as per my discussion with one of the gentlemen who set it up. We may encounter the same problems thus I propose we incorporate as Wiki Canada and as per the UK group than get approval to operate under the term Wikimedia Canada from Wikimedia.Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 01:17, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you do agree that that's the best way to go, then please contact the Chapters committee first to make sure that that is acceptable and will not over-complicate things. Cbrown1023 talk 03:25, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I posted to the Chapters committee list serve twice and still have not heard back from them. Do you know a direct email for someone on the committee? --Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 09:54, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The chapter committee indicates that going with Wiki Canada is not an issue from their POV. Thus I have changed the text. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 08:38, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
