Hello. I got a bit curious about the people who participated in the workshops, so I modified a bit a table presented on the project page.

I used numbers of edits from CentralAuth. I didn't edit the second column ("Home wiki"). I removed all of the WMF employees. All of the information in "Notes" column was taken from users' userpages. Admin rights on chapterwikis were not included in "Notes" column. If I made any mistake or omitted important information: I'm really sorry, feel free to correct it.

So as we can see, (at least) 11 out of 22 "volunteers" were in fact not volunteers but employees of affiliates. One of the volunteers is blocked indefinitely on their home wiki which is quite concerning. Only two people hold advanced rights (admin) on content wikis. Most (all?) of these people are affiliated with some Chapters or User Groups.

As I am one of the people who oppose the "Wikimedia->Wikipedia" rebranding, and I know that the situation is quite tense, so it may seem that my comment is just a hate on these people. If someone perceives like that, I am really sorry, but that is not my intention. In any way it isn't hate (or invitation to hate) towards any of the participants; I hope no one sees it like that. These people were invited to the workshops, they went there, probably worked hard during these workshops and helped create these concepts. Great job, guys, I really appreciate it! Yet, at the same time it's quite hard for me to consider this group of people to be in any way a representative of community as a whole. That's the point I tried to convey: community has no representatives, all of the decisions that affect our Projects must be discussed on wiki, with all of us.

IIUC, Secretary of Wikimedia Mexico is an unpaid position. Also, Community Ambassador appears to be a staff position. I agree with your general conclusion. --Yair rand (talk) 06:41, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Tufor: In the FAQ about how workshop participants were selected, you can see that affiliates use Wikimedia branding in their every day work, and are thus critical stakeholders in this project. While you'll also notice that the Bengaluru workshop had a higher percentage of unpaid volunteers, workshop participation was intended to be a sampling of different movement stakeholders involved in different capacities/activities in different regions. Participants are not presumed to be fully representative of every facet and corner of the Wikimedia movement–this would be impossible. And sure, one can make the distinction between those stakeholders that receive compensation and those that don't, but all community members contribute to building our movement, and their experiences and opinions are important in this process. --ELappen (WMF) (talk) 22:53, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
