Talk:Wikipubs

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Too specific[edit]

I do not like this proposal because it is too narrow; it proposes a wiki only for pubs. Imagine if Wikibooks contains only advanced calculus books, if Wikipedia has only articles about rivers, if Wikiquote contains only mnemonics, if Wiktionary only defined conjunctions, if Wikisource contains the works of L. Frank Baum and no other author.

Somehow, we need to clarify that the Wikimedia Foundation is not a general wiki host, though there are many WikiFarms that provide such service. Wikipubs might be a good project, but I suggest that Wikimedia not host it. --Kernigh 00:42, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You make some excellent points. Upon coming up with my idea, I compared it to a number of project proposals on the project proposal page, and came to the conclusion that the Wikipubs idea had more merit than some of the dubious proposals of the past. I also imagined that a site dedicated to pubs, clubs, bars, events, beer, alcohol etc would attract a lot of visitors, it is for these reason that I proposed the project here. Perhaps it is destined for a life outside of Wikimedia, perhaps not, however how can one continue without at least proposing the project and seeing what support there exists? I mean everyone likes to get out from behind the keyboard and have a beer or two, don't they? --James 01:07, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, were not out for just "lots of visitors", and in fact the more visitors to our projects, the more we have to struggle to fund them without ads. The concept also suggests endorsement of alcohol by The Wikimedia Foundation, an organization that strives to itself be as NPOV as usefully possibly. I think that what Kernigh was suggesting was that you consider expanding the project to any eating establishment, including pubs. Essentially it would be a replacement to ChefMOZ, from the people at the Open Directory Project. -- user:zanimum
Once again excellent points, this is one of the reasons why I put the proposal up for discussion to receive feedback from the community. So thanks for that zanimum. The NPOV issue is one which has caused me problems, and i'm not quite sure how to address it. I had decided to expand the scope of the project to include any establishments involved in a good night out. I've already included a few restaurants into the prototype, as these are places I like to eat before heading out. -- James
Just to clarify, if we were to do something along the lines of Wikipubs, I would wholeheartedly agree with POV-content, in the form of reviews. What I was meaning was the fact that with just pubs on the site, it would essentially look like WMF was marking alcohol as being of special importance, which the media would have a field day with, no matter how legit and spectacular the quality of the information. But as for reviews, good for it! -- user:zanimum

Check out http://www.wikitravel.org/. Wikipubs would fit very nicely in their existing framework. They already have sections for restaurants for each article; why not pubs and nigtclubs as well? I think that would be a wonderful fit. --Daniel Mayer 15:17, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No one is interested in ehlping out. This should not become a project. Peace :) --La gloria è a dio 19:51, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
