World War I conscription in Australia[edit]

Given that there was no conscription in Australia during WWI, perhaps this article needs renaming or merging with related articles about the 1916, 1917 plebiscites. Discussion at w:Talk:World War I conscription in Australia. Mitch Ames (talk) 12:24, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

While the referendums proposing conscription for overseas service were unsuccessful, there actually was conscription for the home defence forces. These men typically underwent a short period of full-time training, and then were part of an Army Reserve-type arrangement where they had to attend occasional training camps. PM Hughes controversially activated all the conscripted reservists ahead of one of the referendums (the first, I think), and this is sometimes given as a reason which contributed to the failure of Hughes proposal. Hello, Over the weekend I created the Bluebirds (Australian nurses) article, and half-completed an article on the defences of Australia during the war. Does anyone else have any outcomes to report? Nick-D (talk) 06:17, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
