Questionnaire

Contributors

[edit]
  • Wikimedia Statistics can be difficult to interpret. What is your impression, how many steady contributors do you have?

We have 2 or 3 regularly active contributors in our wikipedia, while many others too joined the development from time to time. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Are your contributors mostly native speakers?

Yes, most of them are native speakers. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Where do your contributors live (regions/country)?

Most of them are from India (Manipur, Assam and Tripura) and Bangladesh. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • How common is it that your contributors meet in real life?

No, we have never met in real life, but we are very active in communication through internet. :):-) Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Other Wikipedias

[edit]
  • Do you have special contacts with other Wikipedias (maybe in related languages)?

Yes, we always used to contribute in association with other Indian language wikipedias. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Do you translate a lot from other Wikipedias? Which ones?

Of course, we translate a lot from English and Simple English wikipedias. And for my personal case besides the general momentum from English language wikis, I also used to translate articles from Hindi, Arabic and Chinese language wikis. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Organization and support

[edit]
  • Is there a Wikimedia chapter in your country? How does your language relate to it?
  • Are there work groups in other organizations about Wikipedia?

Your Wikipedia and the linguistic community

[edit]
  • Is there a language institution for your language, like an Academy, or a club of people interested in your language? Do you have contact with them?

Of course, Meitei language (popularly called, Manipuri language) is one of the 22 scheduled languages of the Indian union. We have Manipuri Sahitya Parishad (literally, Manipuri Literary Society) in Manipur, Assam and Tripura provinces of India. Besides, Manipuri Language Departments are available in Universities of many North East and South Indian provinces. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Who (else) supports you?

Personally, I came to wikipedia by myself, after knowing its prospects and system of working. So, what I can say as my supporters are my fellow co-editors in many Wikimedia projects. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • What does the public outreach for your edition look like? Do you have flyers, give lectures, training etc.?

Truly speaking, Manipuri wikipedia (Meitei wikipedia) is a new one in Wikimedia Foundation. It's not even a year old. It's created in February, 2021. So, most people are unaware of the existence of this new wiki. So, currently, our Manipuri/Meitei Wiki-team do promotion at other social media platforms, outside WMF, to draw attention to other Manipuris/Meiteis. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Do you get feedback from readers?

Yes, I share a lot of Wikipedia article links to other social media platforms. And I found doing this really boost the viewership of those wikipedia articles. Simultaneously, many people gave me feedback about the topic of the article. Some even joined wikipedia to become editors, after reading those articles. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • What other encyclopedias exist in your language?

If this question mean for encyclopedia outside WMF, for Manipuri/Meitei, we have "Vikaspedia", "Manipuri Mirror", "e-pao.net", "Lakhipur Online", "Kangla Online", etc. These sites are mostly bilingual, that's available in both English and Manipuri. There are many other sites too but I am unaware of all of them. Haoreima (talk) 04:32, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Content

[edit]
  • Does your edition concentrate on certain topics, like your region and language, or Latin Wikipedia on Roman history and Christianity?

No, not at all! We create articles from almost many topics, starting from Greek-Roman mythology to Bollywood actors. In fact, we are trying our best to cover almost all the available topics in other major Wikipedias. Haoreima (talk) 04:44, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Did your edition enjoy text donations, for example from older encyclopedias?

Language

[edit]
  • Is there a generally accepted norm about your language (spelling, dictionary, pronunciation)?
Yes, there are many authoritative grammar, dictionary and pronunciation help books, published by different linguists. We strictly follow their common principles. Haoreima (talk) 04:52, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • How do you deal with different spellings, dialects etc. (like B.E. lift and A.E. elevator)?
There are many dialects in Meitei/Manipuri language. But Standard Manipuri (AKA. Proper Meitei) is the most accepted form. So, we use this one while writing articles. Regarding spelling, we use the spelling of the standard dialect, while keeping other spellings as redirects. Interestingly, the number of redirects are roughly equivalent to the number of articles in this wikipedia. :) Haoreima (talk) 04:52, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
