Questionnaire[edit]

Contributors[edit]

  • Wikimedia Statistics can be difficult to interpret. What is your impression, how many steady contributors do you have?
In the range of thirty. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Are your contributors mostly native speakers?
Not many foreigners learn our language, so yes. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Where do your contributors live (regions/country)?
All over Slovenia, with a few native speakers living abroad. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • How common is it that your contributors meet in real life?
Once a year or less. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other Wikipedias[edit]

  • Do you have special contacts with another Wikipedias (maybe in related languages)?
No. There was a proposal for cooperation on a common subject from an editor of croatian WP recently, but nothing came out of it. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we do have some contacts with Serbian and Croatian Wikipedia folks; we attented some meetings etc. I'd say that we do have rather decent informal contacts. --romanm (talk) 18:50, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Do you translate a lot from other Wikipedias? Which ones?
We find translating a useful tool for improving content. We translate mostly from english and a little from german WP. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Organization and support[edit]

  • Is there a Wikimedia chapter in your country? How does your language relate to it?
No. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Are there work groups in other organizations about Wikipedia?
Several student projects at our largest university exist that focus on contributing articles. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There was also cooperation with LUGOS, because we (ie. the members of Slovene Wikipedia) needed formal framework to apply for funds from Ministry of Culture for extending vital articles. --romanm (talk) 18:48, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your Wikipedia and the linguistic community[edit]

  • Is there a language institution for your language, like an Academy, or a club of people interested in your language? Do you have contact with them?
Several on the national level and many more; we have no special contact aside from aforementioned student projects. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Who (else) supports you?
Nobody noteworthy. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • What does the public outreach for your edition look like? Do you have flyers, give lectures, trainings etc.?
An occasional public lecture and magazine/newspaper article from one of the active contributors. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Do you get feedback from readers?
Not usually, except an occasional "you suck" from anonymous editors and an even rarer word of praise. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes the news grabs a hot story about Wikipedia, predominantly negative ones, like the case of "special war" against famoust Slovene sociologist. We usually try to get the best from media focus, even in cases like these. --romanm (talk) 19:00, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It should be noted that the local media mostly talk about english Wikipedia which is the most influential globally, translating news from foreign news agencies. Sometimes accompanied by a remark that there is also a version in Slovene language. Stories about sl WP specifically are very rare. --Yerpo 08:45, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • What other encyclopedias exist in your language?
There are encyclopedias covering most if not all fields of human knowledge, at least broadly. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are specialized encyclopedias of most topics, I agree, but there is no general encyclopedia in Slovene, AFAIK. There are general lexicons, but not general encyclopedias. --romanm (talk) 19:00, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Content[edit]

  • Does your edition concentrates on certain topics, like your region and language, or Latin Wikipedia on Roman history and Christianity?
We focus on our country and its notable citizens, but try to cover all fields. But due to the low number of active editors knowledgeable in different fields, some of them are better covered, such as physics, astronomy, sport and Christianity. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Did your edition enjoy text donations, for example from older encyclopedias?
No. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Language[edit]

  • Is there a generally accepted norm about your language (spelling, dictionary, pronunciation)?
Yes. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are some cases where people do not obey Slovenski pravopis, or think that it is not suitable for certain aspects. Cases include, but are not limited to, transcribing Japanese names. --romanm (talk) 19:02, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • How do you deal with different spellings, dialects etc. (like B.E. lift and A.E. elevator)?
We enforce the norm which is relatively unambigous in this case. --Yerpo 17:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
