How to apply? [edit]

Application process is by invitation only. We will invite non-profit organizations that have aligned missions with the Wikimedia movement to submit an application for the Alliances Fund. Invited applicants will be supported to submit an application.

What do we fund? [edit]

Programs from mission-aligned organizations and groups can focus on supporting:

contributors and editors,
content,
awareness and skill-building initiatives,
advocacy efforts,
strategic planning
partnerships with local Wikimedia communities and Wikimedia projects.

Who can be invited? [edit]

This fund supports organisations whose missions align with ours. We aim to partner with underrepresented and historically marginalised communities.

You may be invited if you:

Are a non-profit organisation in with a mission that aligns with the Wikimedia movement.
Are in an underrepresented or emerging community.
Have a proposal to collaborate with the Wikimedia Community or Wikimedia projects.
Are seeking programmatic support, e.g. furthering ongoing activities, programs, initiatives. This can also include ideating, incubating or building new systems of collaboration with the free knowledge ecosystem.
You have a clear theory of change - how you expect to bring about change within your work and how you will measure it.
You have a commitment to learning through data collection and analysis.
Overhead expenses of up to 30% will be allowed to support the stability of partner organisations.

All applicants must be compliant with Wikimedia Foundation’s requirements for funding. We will do an eligibility check before the review process.

You are not eligible for funding if:

Have experience with Wikimedia projects, communities, or organisations directly related to the proposal prior to submission.
Are in a country that can legally receive funding for the described activities and expenses, based on laws on sending and receiving funds in the United States and their country.
Are not on the United States Department of Treasury Specially Designated Nationals And Blocked Persons List (SDN).
Are not a Wikimedia Foundation staff member or contractor working more than part time (more than 20 hours per week).
Do not have any other open Wikimedia Foundation Funds.
You are a Wikimedia Foundation staff member or contractor.

Behavioural requirements and youth safety

We take all applicants through a due diligence process. This means you need to be in ethical good-standing, (e.g. Wikimedia behaviour, social behaviour, financial behaviour, legal behaviour, etc.).
Applicants must follow the Universal Code of Conduct and Friendly Space Policies.
Does your proposal involve direct contact with children or youth? You need to outline the following:
- Related international and local laws, and provide documentation of the local laws in the annex.
- How you aim to engage young people safely.
- All vetting and training adults working with young people have undergone.
- The protocols to protect physical and psychological safety of young people.

What report to send? [edit]

Here are the reports you need to submit if you are invited for the Alliances Fund.

Final learning report

This is a written report to submit within 30 days after the grant end date.

Go to Wikimedia Foundation Grantee Portal (Fluxx) and log in.
Find the Reports section on the left sidebar. Select the Upcoming link and you will see all upcoming reports.
Select the report and click Edit. Answer the questions in the form. You can write it in any preferred language.
When your report is complete, click Submit to send it for review.

You can prepare the report offline. Make a copy of the report form, answer the questions and copy the text to Fluxx.

Conversation reports

There are also two conversation reports. You will meet the Program Officer online two times in the middle of the grant implementation and after completing the grant. They will ask questions and complete the forms.
