Ĉu vi povus kontribui pri iuj ajn ideoj - etaj aŭ grandaj, sukcesaj & ne tiel sukcesaj - kiujn vi opinias utila por konduki esperantajn kaj alilingvajn projektojn?

9/ Ĉu vi povus kontribui pri iuj ajn ideoj - etaj aŭ grandaj, sukcesaj & ne tiel sukcesaj - kiujn vi opinias utila por konduki esperantajn kaj alilingvajn projektojn?

Nun mi ne scias kiun

10. Ni petas vin indiki vian uzantnomon (kaj via reala nomo kun via geografia situo, se eblas)?

Hello.
Here are my responses to your questions.
1. The Esperanto Wikipedia was the first version of Wikipedia that I encountered. I stumbled across it in 2005 when I googled "Vilhelmo Sxekspiro". I was surprised to find an online Esperanto encyclopedia with articles on many different subjects. I was even more surprised to find that it existed in many other languages too. It was more than a year later that I first edited Wikipedia.
2. I didn't really decide that I "must" contribute to the Esperanto Wikipedia, I just saw that there was no reason why I shouldn't. Wikipedia is a website that anyone can edit and I can speak Esperanto.
3. I usually edit articles about literature, film, food and folklore.
4. I became a registered user on the Esperanto Wikipedia (and on the French, Spanish and Catalan ones) the day after I first edited the English one. I did not know if I would contribute much to the non-English versions of Wikipedia at that time but I wanted to be ready if I saw an article to which I could contribute.
5. I have never attended any Wikipedia meetings.
6. My experiences in editing the Esperanto Wikipedia have been largely positive. I have found the Esperanto Wikipedia to be largely free of edit wars and wiki drama.
7. A good feature of editing the Esperanto Wikipedia is that it is not necessary to use the special characters box to add letters that are not on a standard qwerty keyboard. Typing "cx", "gx", "hx" and "jx" automatically makes the letters c, g, h and j appear with a circumflex. One problem was that I once wanted to add an external link to an online Esperanto translation of "The wizard of Oz". It wasn't possible because there was a "cx" in the web address, which was automatically corrected to a c with a circumflex.
8. I have no experience of that.
9. I think it's more the responsibility of Esperantists than the Wikimedia Foundation to promote the Esperanto Wikipedia. I'm sure it's already formed a part of Esperanto lessons and conferences for a decade now.
10. My user name is Simon Peter Hughes. That is also my full real name (although I don't usually use my middle name Peter in the offline world).
Sincerley, Simon Hughes

1. Kiel vi auxdis pri Vikipedio en esperanto? Kiel vi alvenis al Vikipedio en esperanto?

Kune kun la cetero de Vikipedio.

> 9. Ĉu vi povus kontribui pri iuj ajn ideoj - etaj aŭ grandaj, sukcesaj & ne tiel sukcesaj - kiujn vi opinias utila por konduki esperantajn kaj alilingvajn projektojn?

> 10. Ni petas vin indiki vian uzantnomon (kaj via reala nomo kun via geografia situo, se eblas)? Mirmal, Miroslav Malovec, Cxehxio.

Saluton!

Sorry, I'll use Esperanto for answers.

> Here are the questions: > ======================= > > 1. How did you hear about Esperanto Wikipedia? How did you reached Esperanto Wikipedia?

> 2. Why you decided you must contribute to Esperanto wikipedia?

Mi volis prezenti informon pri mia denaska regiono, pri kiu mankis tekstoj tute.

> 3. What kind of topics you usually edit?

> 4. Why did you join the Esperanto Wikipedia?

> 5. Have you attended or organized community meet-ups? What was the outcome? What were the positives and negatives from these meet-ups?

> 6. What has been your experience in adding content or encouraging content on specific topics?

> 7. How are the technical challenges/issues been for your language? Now, is it easy for a new user to start contributing in wiki easily?

Kredeble starto estas pli facila nun, ol tiam, ĉar aperis multaj klarigoj kaj lernolibroj pri Vikipedio.

> 8. How about interface translation and other things?

> 9. Could you share any and all ideas - small or big, sucessful & not-so-sucessful - that you think can help drive Esperanto and other language projects? > 10. Please share your username (and real name, if possible)?

     1. How did you hear about Esperanto Wikipedia? How did you reached Esperanto Wikipedia?

I first heared about Wikipedia at a talk by Chuck Smith (founder of the Esperanto Wikipedia) at the International Youth Esperanto meeting in Pato Branco (Brazil) in July 2002. So I heared about the Esperanto Wikipedia on the same occasion as I found out about Wikipedia.

I looked at the website shortly afterwards, but didn't start editing before October 2003.

       2. Why you decided you must contribute to Esperanto wikipedia?

At the time that I started editing the Esperanto Wikipedia, I was convinced that the international adoption of Esperanto would be a very good thing for humankind, and thought that it has some chances of being adopted during the next decades. I thought that I could increase its chances a bit by contributing to the Esperanto movement in some way. I saw my contributions to the Esperanto Wikipedia mainly as contributions to the Esperanto movement: Esperanto was at that time on the 9th position of Wikipedia languages by number of aricles, and I saw that as a great chance for Esperanto to be noted more non-Esperantists. So I wanted to help Esperanto stay at a high position in the ranking.

Additionally, I was also driven by my general intelectual curiosity and my rationalistic worldview. This also explains wha I have contributed on Wikipedias in other languages on non-Esperanto topics.

       3. What kind of topics you usually edit?

More than three quarters of my edits are corrections of grammatical or word-use errors, on all kinds of topics. The changes of content are on various topics that I feel competent about, mainly linguistics, mathematics and the Esperanto movement.

       4. Why did you join the Esperanto Wikipedia?

For the reasons mentioned in the response to question 2.

       5. Have you attended or organized community meet-ups? What was the outcome? What were the positives and negatives from these meet-ups?

At a meeting of Esperanto-speaking scientists in Slovakia in 2010, there was a three our session on editing Wikipedia. I participated as an experienced Wikipedia editor and helped others to make edits and understand Wikipedia principles.

One positive outcome was that I could help an Esperantist who had been frustrated by the Wikipedia because he had pointed out a terminological error on a Wikipedia page and had been ignored. I supported his proposal to change the terminology and later carried out the change, which made him more positive about Wikipedia.

       6. What has been your experience in adding content or encouraging content on specific topics?

I was a very active contributor to the Esperanto Wikipedia from 2005 until I became father in 2009, and I had in general mainly positive experiences with adding content.

As I said before, many of my changes were corrections of grammatical or word-use errors. Sometimes it happened that I changed the grammar or terminology in some article, convinced that I was improving the article, but was then criticized by someone who prefered the previous wording or thought that my change was no improvement. The debates resulting from that could sometimes be discouraging, but most of the time I was glad I could interchange views with other contributors (the main problems were a few editors who were very aggressive and quickly offended when someone edited "their" texts).

In my active days I also contributed a lot to discussions about Wikipedia policies and principlesand to ensuring that the policies and principles are not ignored in practice. Sometimes these discussions could be tiring, but in general my experiences were positive.

       7. How are the technical challenges/issues been for your language? Now, is it easy for a new user to start contributing in wiki easily?

The main technical challenge for typing Esperanto on computers are the special Esperanto letters (Ĉ, Ĝ, Ĥ, Ĵ, Ŝ, Ŭ). Already in the very early days of the Wikipedia, the Esperantist Brian Vibber took care of that problem, making Wikipedia adopt Unicode and developing a special add-on to the wiki editor for the Esperanto Wikipedia, which replaces combinations of the form cx, gx etc. by ĉ, ĝ etc. (his work on this issue contributed to him becoming the first Wikimedia employee). When I joined the Esperanto Wikipedia, this solution was already implemented. The main technical issue then was that sometimes foreign bots were making changes to the Esperanto Wikipedia ignoring the fact that they need to enter "uxx" when they want to have "ux" rather than "ŭ". But these problems didn't happen often.

       8. How about interface translation and other things?

I actually contributed a bit to the interface translation as well. In general, the interface has always been translated quite well.

       9. Could you share any and all ideas - small or big, sucessful & not-so-sucessful - that you think can help drive Esperanto and other language projects?

One of the main problems for the Esperanto Wikipedia is that people contribute in a foreign language and there is no check on people's Esperanto skills before they start editing. Because of that, the amount of grammatical and word-use errors is significantly bigger than in printed Esperanto publications, where competent Esperanto speakers check everything before it goes to print. Sometimes there were discussions about introducing some check on people's Esperanto skills before allowing them to edit, but this was never accepted, as it might scare off new editors (and would at any rate might technically difficult to implement).

Since I have become less active, I have the impression that many people are ignorant of the policies and principles of the Esperanto Wikipedia. Theoretically, most policies that were in place in the time when I was active are still in place, because they have never been changed, but since many new contributors aren't aware of them, they aren't much adhered to.

> 1. How did you hear about Esperanto Wikipedia? How did you reached Esperanto Wikipedia?
I don't remember, since it happened some years ago. I suppose both through esperantists who spoke about the project and from the Wikipedia in the Spanish version, t.e. my mother language.
> 2. Why you decided you must contribute to Esperanto wikipedia?
Because it would be an opportunity to use my second language namely Esperanto and simultaneously I would act in the encyclopedian system, that I love.
> 3. What kind of topics you usually edit?
Birds, literature, geography, history.
> 4. Why did you join the Esperanto Wikipedia?
Because it would be an opportunity to use my second language namely Esperanto and simultaneously I would act in the encyclopedian system, that I love.
> 5. Have you attended or organized community meet-ups? What was the outcome? What were the positives and negatives from these meet-ups?
No, I haven't so far, because I wouldn't travel for this purpose, if I can contact with people I need otherways.
> 6. What has been your experience in adding content or encouraging content on specific topics?
I am glad that this is useful for others, and I enjoyed doing it.
> 7. How are the technical challenges/issues been for your language?
Now, is it easy for a new user to start contributing in wiki easily? For a new user it depends of its abilities. For me techniques items can be a hard challenge.
> 8. How about interface translation and other things?
I love translate and for the Esperanto version we can enjoy the help of WikiTrans, but you need to put that in right manner. Some people don't do that and this is a problem for the correcters.
> 9. Could you share any and all ideas - small or big, sucessful & not-so-sucessful - that you think can help drive Esperanto and other language projects?
Encourage.
> 10. Please share your username (and real name, if possible)?
I use two usernames Seminario and Kani, and my real name is Jose Salguero, form Spain.

1. I heard about the Esperanto Wikipedia rather early, sometime in 2002, I think. I was corresponding with a pen pal in Esperanto, and we were both gamers, and there were some game articles in the eo Wikipedia at the time, and we discussed them, with the possibility of playing them by email.

2. I started contributing to the Esperanto Wikipedia because I saw it as a place that I could make a big contribution. In using it, I found fundamental holes in the knowledge base, which I tried to patch up. I wanted to make it more robust and usable.

3. Since I am American, I have mostly edited things that matter to me. I've done much work on top American movies, for example. However, I have also worked to make the Wikipedia more useful to others. As an administrator, I have tried to maintain the image database, removing pictures that are not properly attributed or having improper copyright status, removing orphaned or defective images, fixing obvious grammar mistakes, that sort of thing.

4. Much of the same reasons as #2 above.

5. No, never. However I have met Esperanto Wikipedians at other events.

6. I would like to increase the usability of the Esperanto Wikipedia. Partially because my input (and others) we have a longstanding rule that "stub" (or "stumps" translating from Eo to English) must have at least 3 sentences about the topic. (This helps avoid short non-informative stub-articles like "Jeremiah was a bullfrog.")

7. One problem we have as a community could also be a strength: Almost all Esperantists have Esperanto as a second language. (That being said, we do attract a few native Esperanto-speakers.) Because we are almost all learners, poor grammar sneaks into articles, which we try to fix, but it's a constant struggle. There is also a problem, I feel, that neologisms sneak into the Wikipedia by well-meaning newbies, when standard usage would suggest different wording. Esperanto has some standard and well-accepted grammar books and dictionaries, which new speakers may not be familiar with. That being said, I myself started out as one of those newbies, and I'm sure I made my own errors throughout my wiki-career, and now I am much more competent. :-) However, at the time, I tried to edit articles in a way that relied on things within my ability level while learning the language: adding stub-templates, adding links to articles, and that sort of thing. So, I think even a newbie can make good contributions, if they stay within their ability level, and ask the community for help when needed. That's the thing about the Esperanto Wikipedia group, they are usually eager to help, and because we are a diversely polyglot group, you might be able to get help in your native language to figure out how to say something properly in Esperanto.

Also, in 2006-2007 there was some unnatural growth in our Wikipedia due to the use of bots to do automatic translations and uploads. However, the community did not like the results. The grammar was stilted, messy, and such articles seemed to just sit there without action after creation. In 2007 the Esperanto community banned the use of bots to create articles. This may have slowed down our article-growth, but I think it has improved the Wikipedia, by making it grow more organically. Real people care about their own articles, and bots not so much! :-) I believe we had around 35,000 articles created by bot, and was about 30% of our articles at the time. So, that was 7 years ago, and I think the EO Wikipedia (IMHO) is still seeing problems from that experiment: Those stub bot-created articles and automatically-uploaded pictures are still around, and the community is still sorting through them, even today! So, I would suggest to any new up-and-coming Wikipedias: Do yourselves a favor, and let your Wikipedia grow organically. If you grow your Wikipedia by bot, unless it is carefully monitored, you will almost certainly regret it later.

Our interface is fairly well translated, through Translatewiki.net.

9. In 2004, I found the project on Wikimedia "List of Articles every Wikipedia should have", and helped to organize the effort to fill out such a list of the articles in Esperanto. I think every Wikipedia, big and small, should focus on this. I've also tried to work (internally in the Esperanto Wikipedia) on a second list of 1000 more vital articles. The English language wiki has such a list, but it is 10000 articles, and (in my opinion) it is somewhat centered on the English language. I wanted to craft a list that was international in nature, not anglocentric (while not ignoring important English speakers). Right now I have about 550 articles I've identified for this second list, and I would welcome any input! The benefit of this would be, articles could be promoted to the main list of 1000, or demoted down to the second list, if they are deemed less important. It would also give smaller Wikipedias new goals to shoot for, once they complete the first list, and would make smaller Wikipedias more robust in somewhat important articles. Here's my list so far: https://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikipedio:Dua_listo_de_havendaj_artikoloj

> 1. How did you hear about Esperanto Wikipedia? How did you reach Esperanto Wikipedia?

In the magazine "Esperanto" a long time ago.

> 2. Why you decide you must contribute to Esperanto wikipedia?

To resist the hegemony of English in the Internet.

> 3. What kind of topics you usually edit?

Science topics

> 4. Why did you join the Esperanto Wikipedia?

To build up the amount of practical inforation in Esperanto in the Internet

> 5. Have you attended or organized community meet-ups? What was the outcome? What were the positives and negatives from these meet-ups?

no

> 6. What has been your experience in adding content or encouraging content on specific topics?

No interaction with other contributors because there appear to be so few.

> 7. How are the technical challenges/issues been for your language? Now, is it easy for a new user to start contributing in wiki easily?

No significant problems. Typing in Esperanto is easy. See www.esperanto.org.nz - how to type in Esperanto

> 8. How about interface translation and other things?

We should not need to use the cx surrogate alphabet any more. See 7

> 9. Could you share any and all ideas - small or big, sucessful & not-so-sucessful - that you think can help drive Esperanto and other language projects?

We need more workers for the Esperanto Wikipedia, and all the other non-English Wikipedias, but I don't know how to inspire Esperantists to work on it.

Dear Muzammil,

>

Esperanto bezonas videblan pruvon pri tio, ke ĝi ekzistas.

> 9/ Ĉu vi povus kontribui pri iuj ajn ideoj - etaj aŭ grandaj, sukcesaj & ne tiel sukcesaj - kiujn vi opinias utila por konduki esperantajn kaj alilingvajn projektojn?

Mi ne komprenas la demandon.

> 10. Ni petas vin indiki vian uzantnomon (kaj via reala nomo kun via geografia situo, se eblas)?

Amikeco, Sankt-Peterburgo (Rusio).
