Today I'm looking into producing a Chi-Squared test on R to provide additional analysis for our template testing.


We should also look at the effects the templates may have had beyond edit count. Below is a laundry list of some methodological testing that we should do:

  • Look at variables beyond edit count (blocks, bans, warnings)
  • Determine whether any additional variables are needed
  • Linear modelling of metrics (in combination the results of test may be significant) - I may need to define what constitutes a positive outcome of the template to do modelling
  • Doing analysis on all template results combined

Finished aggregate analysis (see yesterday's entry for details.) The t-test analysis of the Huggle 3 experiment have resulted in inconclusive results with respect to edit activity. It seems that the test template did not make a significant difference based on the analysis so far. It will probably be worth attempting to involve additional variables in the analysis to account for potential bias or noise introduced by other factors.

I tweaked the implementation of the chi-squared testing in R and ran this test over the aggregate Huggle3 experiment data. The null hypothesis here is that the test distribution matches the control which entails a non-significant difference between the results of the test and control with respect to relative edit count changes. Since the p-value is pretty much zero this means that the null hypothesis cannot be rejected based on this test. This does not imply that other methods may be used to determine the relevance the template event may have had on good editor behaviour. The next step I am moving toward will be to include more variables in the analysis and to use linear modeling.

Modified the postings script to read from files for the case of non-English wikis, the motivation being the Portuguese Huggle experiments (analysis below). Subsequently generated postings and metrics before performing analysis.

The results show that the measurement of relative rates of edit activity after the template event show no significant differences given this measure.

Today I did a lot of searching in the new metric space to get a sense of where we can get the most conclusive results out of our short / long template testing. Given the number of variables regression modeling makes sense. Since we are trying to predict one of the two templates given the edit parameters a logistic regression here may make the most sense.

FOR REGISTERED USERS:

Edits decreased by 44.20% for the control and 73.62% for the test template - 91.4% confident

Therefore the control template was certainly a good predictor in seeing a smaller decrease in edits after the posting event for first warning editors that had between 3 and 50 edits before the posting.  When registered users with more than 50 edits before the template posting were included the effect became inconclusive.


FOR NON-REGISTERED USERS:

Edits decreased by 83.71% for the control and 75.00% fro the test - 96.41% confident

Again the control template was a significant predictor in seeing a smaller decrease in edits after the posting event for first warning editors that had made between 5-50 edits before the posting.  Here the variable corresponding to a decrease in deleted edits was also shown to be an effective predictor, if not as strong as the predictor on sheer edit counts.  Note that the effect is not as strong as it is among registered users.

In this group there were no editors above 50 edits before receiving a warning.

A final note that in both cases strong predictors were not seen when editors have less than three edits were collected.


Conclusion:

In this experiment we see that:

  * the control is template results in a much smaller drop in edits post event for namaspace 0.
  * In general the improvements are somewhat larger for registered users (ie. smaller decrease in edits)
