Challenge
There are many important tools in the wikiverse toolshed that could be integrated into MediaWiki or made more easily maintainable.
Current discussions
? where does maintanership and prioritization of actively used tools, on the forge or elsewhere, get discussed?

Ideas[edit]

All of these tools be integrated directly into MediaWiki, or into a single server instance that has an overview of its available services / special pages (packaged up so that anyone who wished could install and run them all for their own network of projects). In generally, the custom tools are not forked or used by others. I don't know if the standard tools are customized in a way that would make migration hard; I expect not. We should spend the time to make our custom work reusable, and our customized versions of standard tools easily forkable by subprojects.

Tools[edit]

Custom tools in the shed: not currently part of MediaWiki core, but maintained exclusively by Wikimedians:

  • Metrics + experiments: Event Metrics, growth experiments
  • Tools + cloud: Tool Hub, our Openstack-browser instance,
  • Translation: Content translation
  • Votes: vote.WM.org
  • Wiktionary: Cognate
  • Chat + notifs: Echo, Flow
  • Reading: reading lists, book renderer?
  • Editing: wikimedia editor tasks? (don't know what this is! but it runs on x1)
  • Other: wiki url shortener

Standard tools in the shed (either part of MW core or maintained by an established web-scape project):
