North American meeting and hub
[edit]Hi again! I hope you can join a NARWHAL meeting again some time(NARWHAL/August_2024) and at some point that you might comment on the draft "North American hub" proposal: North American Wikimedians/Hub founding. I want it to be an easy agreement for various groups to join. There are things we can do when officially aligned, like apply for funding to give small grants for small events, that we can't do yet. I think if we can get 10 user groups together across North America, that we'll have critical mass. -- econterms (talk) 00:12, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
Anglo American Hub
[edit]preliminary thoughts
The original concept for a North American Hub was defined by the geography of North America, including Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This geographic definition was generally interpreted to exclude Central America and Greenland, but include the Lucayan Archipelago and the Hawaiian Islands.
A major problem for a North American Hub is the dominance of the United States in North America in terms of population and culture. Unfortunately, this dominance is futher complicated by a political movement to assert United States political and military hegemony over all of the Americas. Mexico has indicated an interest in creating a Latin American Hub. The peoples of the Americas comprise scores nationalies and hundreds of [w:Ethnicity|ethnicies]] and cultural heritages. What links Wikipedia users are the languages of the world.
Rather than have a geography based North American Hub, I suggest an English language based Anglo American Hub for all of the Americas. There are currently 29 countries (both sovereign and dependent) of the Americas in which English is commonly spoken.
