Get started with the Lua interface to simplify the preparation of modules for translation in MetaWiki

[edit]

Greetings!

The Language and Product Localization team has developed a Lua interface to simplify the preparation of Lua modules for translation in the MetaWiki platform. This means that module developers can now use the new Lua interface to load translatable strings, and the translators can translate them in the same translation interface that is used for templates and wiki pages.

This improvement makes it easier for translators to find and edit module strings without dealing with raw Lua code. It helps prevent mistakes that could break the module during translation.

We invite you to watch our demo video and read more about translatable modules to understand how it works. Please give us your feedback on this talk page on how well the Lua interface addresses the challenges in your workflow and how useful it is in module localization tasks. You can also refer to Module:User Wikimedia project, which was recently converted to utilize these messages, for example usage.

Your feedback is important as it will help us evaluate and decide how to continue developing and improving this interface, extend it to other wikis, or change our approach.

Thank you, and we anticipate your honest feedback.

Hello. I'm a sysop on viwiki. In 2023, you reported this problem, and a sysop advised that we should delete them. Now, in 2025, I'm doing this task, by running this query and run a script to mass delete it, both via my main and bot account. After that, I switched to running Python code to query-and-delete automatically. But the number of pages is too large (per this query), so is there any better solution for this? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 10:52, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Hide on Rosé Hi, I'm actually running a massive deletion in ruwikinews too (see wikinews:ru:Special:GoToComment/c-Ladsgroup-20250901224400-Are_these_pages_needed?) I can do this for you too. I use pywikibot's delete.py and I can produce the full list from our servers. As long as the community is okay with me being admin for a bit. It's better that way too since I delete with a speed that wouldn't cause issues to the infra. I probably also skip any page that has more contributors than the bot to avoid deleting any page that has valid discussions. Does that sound good to you? Amir (talk) 11:05, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Well, I'm running a bot here: Special:Contribs/HoR bot (local approval). Since I requested the eliminator flag (not the sysop flag), I'm not able to run Pywikibot, so I have to perform the task via the raw API (with a help by @DreamRimmer). Can you describe more about your solutións? Also, the number of pages is too large, is there a way to hide them in Special:Log (but not the log when we go to the page directly)? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 11:24, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have coded the script that HoR is using, which can be found at https://public-paws.wmcloud.org/66207742/HoRbot.ipynb. They have limited deletions to 15 pages per minute using PWB throttle, so processing over 4,385,000 pages, filtered to those with only one revision made by a bot, would take more than six months of nonstop running. Fifteen pages per minute is a reasonable speed, but what speed do you consider ideal for the servers? One correction to HoR’s message: we are using the raw API with Pywikibot’s data module, so it is still Pywikibot. – DreamRimmer 11:28, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think up to 60 per minute would be okay (I know it means it'll take "only" two months but I don't think we can go faster). Make sure to delete via bot flag so it doesn't show up in RC but otherwise it should be fine. Amir (talk) 11:41, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Ladsgroup Yeah the bot has its flag. – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 11:53, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@DreamRimmer What if I increase the speed to 120 ppm? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 16:04, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Hide on Rosé: I am being too cautious with the servers, which is why I initially used only 15. I think 120 might be too aggressive, since this is not a one-hour job but will run for months. What Amir suggested is a safe speed. – DreamRimmer 16:17, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
