Need for language-specific steward help[edit]

Hi, Mardetanha.

Please see Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Tajik Wikibooks. I think it's unlikely that LangCom will actually move to close the project; as you probably know, there is a strong bias against closing projects under most situations. However, there does seem to be some inappropriate content on that wiki. In particular, there are three types of content there:

  1. Content classically appropriate for Wikibooks: Instructional and educational texts
  2. Content more appropriate for Wikisource: Content in Tajik that has been published previously and is no longer subject to copyright
  3. Other content: Short stories, poems, etc.

Persian is the closest I can get on the Stewards' list of languages, so I am hoping you can help me. In particular, I'd like to identify content in category 2 above, so that it can be moved to Wikisource. (For now, Tajik content is in Old Wikisource.) And I'd like to identify content in category 3 so that it can possibly be deleted.

There is not a ton of content there. I don't know if you can parse any of it, but if you can, that would be helpful. Thank you. StevenJ81 (talk) (clerk for LangCom) 14:43, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

A quick review[edit]

Hello. Could you please take a look at CNBanner:Stewvote-text1/fa and see if it correctly translated? Thank you! —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:01, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

Yes it is correct :-) Mardetanha talk 08:17, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Wikimania Ambassador[edit]

I noticed that you have signed up as a Wikimedia Diversity Ambassador, after the Diversity Conference held in Stockholm 2017. In August this year, Wikimania will take place in Stockholm, and our goal is to use Ambassadors to reach out to local communities, to spread the news about the conference and the outcomes afterwards. The conference theme (still to be announced) will connect closely to diversity. If you would like to be involved as a Wikimania ambassador, please sign up at the Ambassador page at the Wikimania wiki!

A first thing to do, if you would like to help out, would be to translate the scholarship page at the Wikimania wiki into the language(s) you speak!

Hello Mardetanha! We are happy to announce that the steering committee election 2019 is now open for voting. Because you have joined the user group before 28 February 2019, you are eligible to vote. Not unlike last year, you can vote support for multiple candidates, at most one support for each candidate. Also, oppose votes are not allowed, but discussions are welcome on the talk page.

On behalf of the steering committee,

The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support[edit]

Globe of letters.png

Hello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.

While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), we are asking your help for Chinese, Ukrainian, Bengali, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Polish, Farsi, German, Cantonese, Finnish, Hindi, Thai, Dutch, and Greek, as these also matter to affiliates! If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 21:35, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

Upcoming 2019 Affiliate-selected trustee position on the Board of Wikimedia Foundation[edit]

Greetings Mohsen,

My name is Gerald Shields, also known as user:Geraldshields11. I am asking for your top rank vote for me in the election for one of two open trustee positions on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees.

I am asking for your vote to help support emerging communities and promote an inclusive education environment on all wiki projects. Also, I plan to promote various other issues as I mention in my statement and answers to various questions. I ask that you show your support for the issues that need to be address by voting for me as one of your preferences.

My candidacy information page is Affiliate-selected Board seats/2019/Nominations/Gerald Shields on Meta or can be found at Gerald Shields candidate. As of the 7 May 2019 list of questions, I am the only candidate to have responded to all of the “Questions for all candidates - Questions for this individual candidate that do not apply to other candidates”. My answers give more details on why the Iranian Wikimedians User Group should vote for me.

Thank you for your time, discussion, and consideration of my candidacy. I appreciate it.

My best regards,

Gerald Shields

Hello. i can become a member of here? Arminsatari (talk) 10:50, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

did not close, you did super-vote.

Can you provide a numerical tally of !voters, per your count, that supposedly led you to see mild support? Do you feel that the users who are supposed to be sanctioned 9and hence have opposed the proposal) shall be lend an equal vote-weighing, as contrasted with the weight of neutral !voters?

Also, what led to you conclude that closing the RFC can be considered as a minor edit?

Suppose the az-wiki community grants (+sysop) to Cekli tomorrow, via a RFA. Do you see any concerns?

Interestingly, is it true that do you know (m)any az-wiki admin(s), personally? If yes, were they involved in the incidents discussed over the RFC? If yes, do you see any conflict-of-interest? Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 16:02, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

Hello Dear friend, there are 3 aspects and angels that I would like to discuss, first as I checked you are long term user and you have good number of edits so I assume you are familiar with assuming good faith, from your comment I don't feel it and if you don't assume good faith about me and I see no reasons to assume good faith about you. second, do you or anyone think meta or anyone (wmf) has the mandate to desysop all admins of the mid-size community? imagine you wanted to do the same with enwiki and dewiki or any wiki, they would crucify you in a heartbeat, but this is not my own view and I feel that the global community has to have a say in global issues, but the third and most important thing is, from RFC we understand that there are issues in azwiki community and we have to solve them. we identified and acknowledge the problems. None of azwiki admins got their hat because of me but they got it from the trust of other community members, removing admin status from everyone is not going to make azwiki better or make new admins much attentive to policies, the ultimate solution is to educate them and help them to raise, personally, I decided to make a move and travel there (loosing my precious summer vacation) to make azwiki better, to make it in a way that it should be, if it is needed I will travel more and I will do online education/courses (up untill now I have helped with azwiki with many issues, as most members of azwiki trust me). If I feel we are not moving forward, I myself would open up the RFC again. but we need to do our best to help the community to grow.
regarding your question, I would defiantly oppose Cekli, as wheel waring is a very very poor action for an admin and it should not be tolerated or repeated, before RFC we have removed admin status from both admins and one could gain it back through a community process. but again if cekli or anyone has the communities trust then so be it.

hopefully, this would cover all your concerns, like you, I wanted all the best for azwiki, and the last point, I have so many friends in azwiki many of them are still active and some of them are not but this has nothing to with friends, for me well-being of azwiki is the most important factor and it is above all friendships for me Mardetanha talk 21:33, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

You are expecting at least a decades worth of caviar. Right? And medals too, I imagine. 21:36, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Mardetanha, I was suprised to see that a steward applied a close with such serious problems.

  • The biggest problem with your close is this: I will be traveling to Azerbaycan this month (with WMF support). You had a clear conflict of interest prior to closing. Anyone with a personal stake in receiving travel-support (financial or otherwise) as a result of an RFC-closure obviously cannot serve as closer. I request and hope that you acknowledge that the COI-close was a mistake, and that you withdraw your closure.
  • Additionally, based on a quick&dirty skim of the responses to the RFC, it looks like upwards of 80% support. I expect few people would consider it reasonable to describe that as "mild support". Not only is that enough to get elected steward, it looks like the RFC had a higher support rate than any member of the Wikimedia Board of Trustees in the last election.
  • Much of the opposition came a fixed handful of people with the most obvious conflict of interest - AzWiki admins who would lose their admin bit. Aside from the early fixed number of COI opposes, the rest of the global community demonstrated a strong consensus. Those fixed COI-opposed get progressively diluted the longer the RFC was open and more uninvolved people participated. The support rate has been progressively rising the entire time the RFC was open, and was obviously still rising towards the much higher rate of general community consensus. That makes it even less reasonable to descibe community consensus as "mild support", and less reasonable to casually disregard it.
  • I believe consensus was clear the abusive admins could not and or would not be trusted to fix the problem themselves, short of removal. Several of them quite blatantly declared that they had no intention of fixing any problems - they either denied any problems needed to be fixed or made bald declaration that they were entitled to run the wiki however they like. Nationalistic warriors are not inclined to change willingly, and they are definitely unfit for adminship.
  • Regarding your question do you or anyone think meta or anyone (wmf) has the mandate to desysop all admins of the mid-size community: I'm not sure I'd call 15 admins is "mid-sized", but regardless, the answer is obvious. Yes. We have previously desysoped wikis when the global community demonstrated a clear consensus that the admins were abusive and unwilling/unable to apply policy. In particular NPOV policy is explicitly non-negotiable and cannot be superseded. The only mechanism we have for enforcement is to remove malfeasant admins. By challenging whether there can be a mandate to desysop, you are effectively nullifying the global NPOV policy. I suspect Jimbo... among others... might raise objections.
  • Your comments above about "we" and your "friends in azwiki" hardly give the impression of an impartial objective closer.

As a footnote, I had returned to the RFC page to post on more evidence of ongoing and pervasive problem. For example, I filed a report against admin edit warring without discussing the content, for actively refusing to discuss the conent. They outright declared an intent to continue edit warring and continued to refuse all attempts to discuss the content. Instead they issued an abusive demand that I edit Armenian Wikipedia instead. As you can see at the link, the entire AzWiki admin-community actively or passively supports that behavior. That admin engaged in the same behaviour on other articles, and continued by issuing an abusive block, and they were actively supported by several other admins. I could document more, but more evidence of abuse if redundant given the evidence and obvious consensus already present in the RFC. Alsee (talk) 04:20, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

I am very busy and I don't have more time to spend on this but just clarify some points, wmf didn't offer me anything to close RFC or anything, I asked them and I suggested them that it would be helpful if we can provide them some kind of education. my friend is wikipedia and there is noone friend above this. Admins are bad but it doesn't mean they are bad people but they have a lower standard, as person from enwiki you shouldn't expect same standard (I am not saying it is good that they are bad but they have to learn and now they know we are watching them), you have started your edits in AZwiki in most disputed article of Azwiki which is a very bad idea, simply don't do it or start from somewhere esle, NMW03 is not a very good admin and if you bump into any problem from now on I can interfere. another point is that if an admin action is supported by several admins it is probably right and if you don't know the language in an expected standard please don't edit Wikipedia using google translate or anything Mardetanha talk 07:56, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
if an admin action is supported by several admins it is probably right - ordinarily I would agree with that. However AzWiki has a systemic admin problem. The behavior they were supporting was an admin editwarring on multiple articles simultaneously, edit warring with unexplained reverts, failing to discuss, and proceeding to issue a involved block against an experienced editor, with no warning.
wmf didn't offer me anything to close RFC or anything - it doesn't matter how it's phrased. You had an expectation that you would receive something of value. I expect the general community would consider that to be a clear COI. That clearly requires you to recuse from closing that RFC. I again ask you to withdraw your close. I also note that you did not address or dispute my concern that the the result was more than "mild support", that there was indeed a clear consensus. Alsee (talk) 08:46, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
I think you didn't get it, this travel was/is not something of value but rather I spent my time but again I checked your edits in azwiki and I would say they were so soft on you and if you did same thing on fawiki or many other wikipedias you have been blocked indefinitely and if they seek my advice, I would suggest them to do so, Every Wikipeda has it is own rules and norms if you don't speak the language of Wikipedia simply don't edit it, it is again basic policies, and get my back to your request I won't open the RFC but I have already started to do what is in benefit of community, WMF is also determined to provide them training and support that they need, I would reiterate myself that azwiki admins don't have very high quality but it doesn't necessarily mean you are/were right Mardetanha talk 08:58, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
I can read Azerbaijani to a decent level (and still improving on writing skills). Can you kindly clarify the errors of Alsee's edits, that supposedly deserved a block? Also, Alsee is a highly established Wikimedian; why can't he choose to edit any topic out of his free will, irrespective of the disputed nature? Thanks in advance, Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 09:10, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
If you can read and write in Azert please engage in a discussion the talk page of the article, if you have valid arguments you might have it changed but if you or anyone can't read and write a language a decent level, you should NOT edit Wikipedia, though I think Wikipedia is good teaching tool for languages it is up to community if accept it or not. Mardetanha talk 10:00, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Even I myself as a native speaker of the language, lack a decent writing skill of Azeri in the latin script so I Don't edit and mess with AZwiki Mardetanha talk 10:02, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
That's a straw-man reply; Alsee's proficiency with the language did not affect the quality of his edits, which were mainly concerned with converting piped links to normal links (given that the article about genocide was finally moved by a steward per global consensus). He was blindly reverted across multiple t/p(s) and admins asked him to edit, when asked to engage ! So, please point out the errors of Alsee's edits or apologize for your ill-issued warning and threat of block. Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 14:49, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

I didn't want to make myself an issue on this page, but I guess that has already happened. It appears the first significant issue arose with my edit here, where I changed the POV redirect [[Qondarma Erməni soyqırımı|Erməni soyqırımı iddiası]] into a direct link to the article [[Erməni soyqırımı]]. Mardetanha, do you consider that edit block-worthy? Warning-worthy? Or even appropriate to revert? At this point an Admin began behaving in what I believe constitutes clearly blockworthy behavior by any editor, which I ultimately reported here. While you can certainly criticize the laguage quality of my report on that Talk page, I am most interested to hear whether you believe the appropriate response is deal with complaint against the admin based on the diffs provided, or warn/block the complaintant for poor language around those diffs. And given that there has been no resolution to that report, and given that there is no Arbcom there, given that the admins there have limited ability to deal with another admin, and given that you Mardetanha are a steward, given that you have apparently claimed the entire authority and responsibility for dealing with problems at that wiki, perhaps you would be so kind as to evaluate&resolve that report?

Later I made this edit where the image-caption was apparantly a bad translation. I believe it was a rather poor action for the clearly-appropriate-image to be deleted along with the caption, but aside from that, I was warned for the bad translation. Fine. Then I restored the image with the caption Adana 1909. I am curious whether you believe that edit also warrants a revert&block-threat. Perhaps "Adana, 1909" would have been prefferable, or "Adana (1909)", caption styles which I find used in other AzWiki articles. However the second revert, again removing a clearly relevant image that improved the article, does not appear to have been an attempt to improve the encyclopedia. It appears to me that it was nothing but an excuse to drive off an editor who was improving an article that the admin did not want improved. Or, maybe I'm in the wrong.... maybe "Adana 1909"-without-a-comma is such grevious damage to the article that it did warrant removing the image and warranted laying a foundation to insta-block on the next vaguely-plausible claim of a grammar error. Alsee (talk) 14:38, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
  • Also, why is the mailing list over task T228542 private-only? Enabling the transparency of discussions was a core locus of the RFC and that does not mean shifting from a FB/Whatsapp group to mailing list. Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 09:10, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Mailing list are being archived and accessible for WMF (unlike whatsapp and ... and I think they are far better than anything else, I think they are more transparent than other tools), they are far better than WhatsApp telegram group which many Wikipedians tend to use and there is no policy against it, via mailing list I/we can make sure all admins are aware of any issues where normally it is not case in azwiki. Mardetanha talk 09:14, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Even if the WMF can view mailing list activity, they almost certainly are not doing so. I think that the value to a mailing list would be archiving of decisions, not oversight. We should encourage the community to use open processes to form consensus, rather than private processes like a mailing list or Facebook. – Ajraddatz (talk) 19:32, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Of course I understand the value of open and transparent discussion but many communities are heavily using extra wiki tools to discuss, at least via mailing they can hold responsible for what think and say, even with mailing list you can never make sure that there is no other form of communication but for now I am pushing for mailing list to see how would it turn out Mardetanha talk 19:49, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Please indent properly. Your response (yet again) does not make any sense. We are asking for a publicly viewable mailing list, not a private one. We don't have any objections to the usage of mailing list. Winged Blades of Godric (AWB) (talk) 21:03, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
I am not going to respond to any of your comments and what you ask means nothing to me Mardetanha talk 21:09, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Mardetanha based on your last comment, you have made it clear that you do not intend to continue a constructive discussion. I hope you see how problematic your last comment was, and I hope that you change your mind.
Winged Blades of Godric I agree with your concerns. Admin business should be handled on the admin noticeboards. A big part of the problem was that the admins were acting as an off-wiki conspiracy club. There's no way consensus would have supported Mardetanha's "solution" of gathering the admins for a physical-meetup-buddy-club. That's like trying to douse a fire with gasoline. Giving them an officially-endorsed clubhouse mailinglist only further legitimizes the problem. However I see the the mailing list as small and incidental to the issue of the closure itself.
I can lay out a plan for us to take effective action about the close, but if Mardetanha intends to battle against consensus then it would be big and ugly and unpleasant for everyone. How motivated are you to take action on this? Alsee (talk) 00:32, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
Alsee, This is also my last comment for you, I have started to help azwiki to best of my capacity, to do this I have made it clear for azwiki admins that AZwiki is wiki in azerbaijani language and it is not Wikipedia for Azerbaijan, and I am determined to hold online meeting for next 12 month to help with possible issues. WMF is also on board with this, and if we feel more help from is needed from them, WMF is going to help them with such things. that's all and for your case, you are engaged in content dispute in Azwiki without sufficient language proficiency please don't do it. if you faced another issue please let me know (I have neglected your threatening tone which is way worse than what azwiki admin did ) Mardetanha talk 07:09, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
