Technical requirements

The concept is to create a wiki of wiki-based video games or wikified video games. The game engine is created on the wiki and each video game data are written on each page and subpages. The video games can be rendered with web technologies such as HTML5. Anyone can play and edit games.

The main reason of this project is to allow anyone to share its creativity related to the video game art without the need of learning computer science. Most of the human beings may have a new idea for a video game and only a few percents of the population have the opportunity to invent, develop and publish a video game. People don't have to come to the video game creation. The video game creation comes to them. Only a few clicks are necessary to start to contribute instead of having to search a good software, install it and learn video game development.

Game Cloud[edit]

Although it is not created under the Wikimedia umbrella, the Game Cloud has been created to implement this proposed project and may be one day integrated to the Wikimedia Foundation. At this point, the Game Cloud already allows users to create, edit and play to 2D platformers with unlimited map sizes. The wiki is using HTML5 and 2D canvas. A WebGL version has already been implemented and published. The video games can be edited graphically using a 2D canvas. However, the features are still limited:

  • You can only create solid blocks and bombs.
  • The only video game target is to find the key on the map.
  • No sound implemented.
  • No background customization.
  • No game description.

So this project still needs lots of work. The wiki has 145 video game pages.
